Former State Rep. Is Commencement Speaker At His Alma Mater
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Former Florida State Rep- resentative, Edwin (Ed) Narain was the commence- ment speaker Friday evening at his alma mater, St. Leo Uni- versity.
Narain addressed more than 200 graduates, their fam- ilies and friends. He shared with them his journey of ac- quiring a college education and where it has taken him; while telling them what is ex- pected of them as St. Leo Uni- versity graduates.
“The world needs St. Leo University graduates,” he told them over and over.
About his journey, Narain told the graduates it was 12 years ago that he missed a job promotion because he did not have a college degree. How- ever, on the flight back to Tampa from a job-related event, he met an advisor with St. Leo University, who en- couraged him to apply there to complete his education.
He did, and not only did he earn a B. A. degree in Psychol- ogy in 2007, 2 years later (2009), he earned the Master’s

degree in Business Adminis- tration. Following his dreams, he went on to complete law school at Stetson University College of Law in 2013, earn- ing the Dean’s Award.
The following year, Narain didn’t slow down. He was elected to serve as a Florida State Representative. He told the audience about the 2 bills he is most proud of: the Arthur Green, Jr. Act that led to additional sensitivity train- ing for law enforcement offi- cials; and the Dozier School for

ing has gone away, it will be time to do something for oth- ers. He quoted Matt. 25:40: “What you do for the least of these, you do unto me.” It’s now time for the St. Leo grad- uate to step up and lead, using the 6 core values of the univer- sity: community, respect, integrity, personal devel- opment, responsible stew- ardship and excellence.
He concluded by telling the graduates to “dream big, move intentionally and love one an- other.”
In other graduation notes,
Ms. Quinisha Abrahams
(Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management) gave the 2018 Class Farewell speech. She talked about her college journey beginning 16 years ago and the intersections – streets, boulevards, avenues – she traveled to reach success. She too, re-enforced the univer- sity’s core values Narain talked about.
Husband and wife, Kayla (Magna Cum Laude, Criminal Justice) and Nathan (Busi- ness Administration: Manage- ment) Ross received a standing ovation as they re- ceived their degrees.
Boys bill, which he co-spon- sored with then-Sen. Arthe- nia Joyner.
In addition to St. Leo Uni- versity giving him a second chance, Narain says his ‘rock’ was his wife, Monica, who encouraged him to continue his education and “held things together while I was chasing so many dreams.”
He did tell the graduates that in order for him to move forward, he had to let go of the past and let go of the hurts in
order to go after the things he had “asked God for.”
The past 10 years have been filled with other exciting events in his life. In addition to earning the 2 degrees, he had the joy of becoming the father to 2 daughters, Zahara and Elania, promotion on his job (he is the Regional Director of External Affairs, AT&T), a Trustee for St. Leo, and he be- came a State Representative.
Narain told the group that after all the fanfare of graduat-
