College Awareness Forum Termed Successful
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
The coordinators of the recent College Awareness Forum held at CareerSource Tampa Bay termed the event successful. About 30 stu- dents and parents attended the event, however, Gilene Janvier, one of the coordinators, said they accomplished a lot with that group. There were also several vendors and agencies to offer assistance to prospective college students.
Five former students who had attended pre- vious College Forums returned to give their perspective on college life and the process high school students should take for smooth transi- tion from high school to college.
Ms. Janvier, Youth Lead Career Counselor at CareerSource, joined the coordinators of this event 5 years ago, “because I saw a need for it. When you look at education and work force de- velopment, you can see where the 2 tie in,” she explained.
“We can’t assume that the kids know what to do or where to go. They need to know that ed- ucation is very important. Sometimes when they graduate from high school, life becomes real.
“We chose to do it this way so that the kids can hear it from other students close to their age. It helps them to visualize themselves in this position,” she further explained. Ms. Janiver said the coordinators hope to host this event at least twice a year to engage more students.
