Koby Altman has been tasked with trying to rebuild the Cleveland Cavaliers after LeBron James left the fran- chise a second time, and owner Dan Gilbert appar- ently feels he has been doing a solid job of that.
Altman has agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Cavs, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski re- ports.
as GM in 2017, but that was a much different roster with LeBron still in the mix. In any event, Gilbert approves of the work Altman has done, which includes hiring a new head coach in John Beilein. Gilbert purchased the Cavs in 2005, and the 37- year-old Altman is the first GM who has received a con- tract extension from the owner.
Stephen Strasburg Opts Out, Gives Up $100M To Become Free Agent
STEPHEN STRASBURG
Note to Yankees: Another elite starter has hit the open market.
Stephen Strasburg
opted out of the final four years of his contract with the Washington Nationals, three days after the star pitcher was chosen MVP of the World Se- ries.
The move Saturday makes the 31-year-old right-hander a free agent. Strasburg — who was one of the stars in the Na- tionals celebration parade earier in the day — gave up $100 million he had been guaranteed from 2020-23 as part of a $175 million, seven- year contract he agreed to with the Washington in May 2016.
Though Strasburg still could re-sign with the Nation- als, the right-hander also could be a fit for the Yankees.

Had they refused, they ap- parently would not have been permitted to play in the sec- ond half.

Washington Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle told the Washington Post that President Trump's rheto- ric is behind his decision not to join the World Series champions during their visit to the White House on Mon- day.
What he's saying: “There’s a lot of things, policies that I disagree with, but at the end of the day, it has more to do with the divisive rhetoric and the enabling of conspiracy theories and widening the di- vide in this country," Doolit- tle said.
“At the end of the day, as much as I wanted to be there with my teammates and share that experience with my teammates, I can’t do it,” Doolittle told the Post. “I just can’t do it.”
Doolittle mentioned his wife, who has two moms: “I want to show support for them. I think that’s an impor- tant part of allyship, and I don’t want to turn my back on them."
“I have a brother-in-law who has autism, and [Trump] is a guy that mocked a disabled reporter," Doolittle said. "How would I explain that to him that I

hung out with somebody who mocked the way that he talked, or the way that he moves his hands? I can’t get past that stuff.”
"My wife and I stand for inclusion and acceptance, and we’ve done work with refugees, people that come from, you know, the ‘shithole countries,'" Doolittle said, referring to Trump's com- ments in a 2018 meeting.
The big picture: Doolittle is among several high-profile athletes to decline an invita- tion to the White House for political reasons during the Trump administration.
Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals also de- clined a visit after winning the Stanley Cup this year.
So did some of the most prominent members of last year's Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles.
