Jameis Winston ‘Leads’ Bucs To Victory
Rays To Release OF Desmond Jennings
Second-year Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback, Jameis Winston, looked like he’s ready for the season to begin after his perform- ance Friday in the team’s pre- season game against the Cleveland Browns.
Winston recorded 259 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half, giving his team a 27-3 lead over the Browns, that ended with a 30-13 preseason vic- tory.
Winston’s most exciting throws were made with pure athletic ability as he extended plays to wait until his re- ceivers were open.

On another play, Win- ston was secure in the pocket when he found wide receiver Vincent Jackson for a 31- yard play.
The Buccaneer defense stepped up, recording 8 sacks against the Browns. Some of the sacks were attributed to the defense forcing the Browns into third and long plays.
Adam Humphries
scored on a 73-yard punt re- turn, Bernard Reed had a 43-yard punt return, and rookie kicker, Roberto Aguayo, went six-for-six on field goal and extra points.
The Tampa Bay Rays plan to release outfielder Desmond Jennings on Saturday, the team an- nounced.
Jennings, 29, is hitting .200 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs on the season.
“It was time. Best for him, best for us, going forward,” manager Kevin Cash told reporters.
Jennings was placed on the disabled list in early Au- gust with a left knee contu- sion.
The Rays drafted Jen- nings in the 2006 amateur

Colin Kaepernick Will Continue
Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has signed his franchise tender and will begin practicing on Monday, the team announced Mon- day.
“It’s good to have him back,” coach Andy Reid said. “He’s got a smile on his face and he’s ready to go. His hair is a little longer, but other than that, he’s ready to go.”
The Chiefs placed their franchise tag on Berry in March and the two sides were unable to reach a long- term deal before the July 15 deadline. He will earn $10.806 million this season.
Reid said that he does not expect Berry to play

would only go to strengthen his case.
The NFL issued a state- ment on the protest Saturday, saying that players are “en- couraged but not required to stand” during the anthem.
Kaepernick is of mixed descent, and told NFL.com that after discussing things with his family, decided to be more outspoken about racial issues. He is adopted, and was raised by white parents and siblings in California.

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will continue to sit for the national anthem until “there’s significant change,” he told reporters on Sunday.
Kaepernick chose not to stand for the anthem before San Francisco’s preseason game on Friday in protest of what he believed was racial oppression.
“This country stands for freedom, liberty, justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now,” the quarter- back said Sunday. “When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to repre- sent in this country... I’ll stand.”
Kaepernick added that he is not worried about his safety, because if something were to happen to him then it

Game With Back Injury
From Miami Program
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo left Thursday’s preseason game against the Seahawks with an apparent back injury after being sacked.
Romo left the game clutching his back after being sacked by Seahawks defen- sive end Cliff Avril on his third play from scrimmage. Romo scrambled outside the pocket to his left and was chased down, landing awk- wardly and hunching forward as he fell.
He walked off under his own power and was exam- ined at length by training staff. He would not return to the game as a precaution and coaches’ decision. Reporters report Romo is unlikely to play in Dallas’s final presea-

son game.
Head coach Jason Gar-
rett said at halftime of the team’s broadcast that the team did not think Romo’s injury serious.
Romo, 36, played in just four games last season as a recurring shoulder injury kept him sidelined. He had missed just two games the previous four seasons.
Miami has dismissed two of its top defensive players from the team for violating NCAA rules, the team an- nounced Saturday.
Redshirt junior defensive end Al-Quadin Muham- mad and senior linebacker Jermaine Grace were per- manently dismissed for an undisclosed violation. The university will honor their scholarships through their graduations from the univer- sity. In a statement, Miami said there will be no further penalties for the program as no staff members or boosters were involved.
The Palm Beach Post re- ported that Muhammad and Grace missed parts of the Hurricanes’ practice on Thursday as part of an NCAA investigation into their use of

luxury rental cars. Muhammad led the
team in tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (5) last season. Grace led the team in tackles with 79.
Muhammad missed the entire 2014 season after punching another student in the face, leading to his sus- pension. He was also sus- pended for last year’s season opener for a violation of team rules, the Post notes.

Safety, Major Wright among the first round of cuts by the Bucs.
The Bucs have made their initial wave of roster cuts, with 12 players waived and re- leased on Sunday to get the team within two moves of the NFL’s cutdown to 75 by Tues- day afternoon.
Safety Major Wright, who has lost out to rookie Ryan Smith in a battle for the team’s fourth safety job, was cut.
The Bucs also cut last year’s starting punter, Jake Schum, who lost out to new- comer Bryan Anger for the punting job, and linebacker Jeremiah George, a Clear- water grad who had played primarily on special teams. Another local among the cuts was former Jefferson High School and University of South Florida receiver, Andre Davis, who had played sparingly in the presea- son.
Most of the other cuts were expected: RB Storm John- son, TE Tevin Westbrook, OL Taylor Fallin, DE Mar- tin Ifedi, DT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, DT Travis Britz, S Kimario McFadden and CB Daniel Davie.
The Bucs must cut two more players by 4 p.m. Tues- day, with another 22 moves after Thursday’s preseason fi- nale to get to the final cut- down of 53 players Saturday.
