Call For Weapons Ban Puts Official’s ‘Career On Line’
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Wednesday, March 7th, members of the Hills- borough County Board of Commissioners will host their regular weekly meet- ing. During that meeting, one Commissioner plans to introduce ordinances that could put his career on the line.
Commissioner Les Miller, Jr., has outlined three separate ordinances that he wants the staff to draft.
The three proposals are: (1): Propose an ordinance on banning assault weapon sales in Hillsborough County;
(2): To increase the waiting period to obtain a firearm from 3 days to 5 days;
(3): To make it a misde- meanor for anyone who makes a threat on social
media or otherwise against a Hillsborough County school.
Commissioner Miller said he is aware of the fact that there is a State law that prohibits local gov- ernment from circumvent- ing state law.
Commissioner Miller said, “The Governor can remove me from office or he can fine me $5,000. I know that I’m putting my career on the line, but I’m going to bring it up any- way.”
He stated that he feels the time in which a person can obtain a weapon after purchase should be in- creased from 3 days to 5 days.
The third proposed ordi- nance pertains to threats made against schools.
“In some of these cases when people make threats against schools, nothing
