NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet Recognizes Young People

Dinner speaker, Rev. Dr. Larry J. Mouton, Jr., Hillsborough County Branch NAACP President, Yvette Lewis and 1st Vice Presi- dent, Joseph W. J. Robinson.
Members of the NAACP Youth Council included: Joel Phanord, Gabrielle Penix, Chadrick Fleno, Yorela Debesay, Nadia Washington, Kristena Armstrong, Ricardo Fryson, Makayla Massey, Jaylin Cole, James C. Cole, Aakilah Wilson, Rosa Fair, Norris Wright, Robyn Hurst, Aallyah Harris, Darvin Harris and Renita Hadley.
The Hillsborough County Branch NAACP held its Free- dom Fund Banquet on Thurs- day, February 8, 2018 to celebrate 100 years in the community. The sold out event was held at the Down- town Hilton Hotel.
The Dinner theme was “Steadfast and Immovable.” The keynote speaker was the Rev. Larry J. Mouton, Jr., Pastor of New Hope M. B. Church.
In addition to honoring, recognizing and presenting awards to adults, several young people received awards.
The winners in the area of Literature were: Christian White of Lincoln Elemen- tary, who said, “My inspira- tion of a local leader in my community is very close to me. I am blessed to have cho- sen my mommy as my daily inspiration...”
Brianna Allen-Quinn
was the middle school recipi- ent. She attends Wilson Mid- dle School and said: “My poem was inspired by my fa- ther. I believe this poem re- lates to the theme because while he did a lot of work out- side Hillsborough County, the stories he brought with him changed people’s life. Then he proceeded to continue his work while managing family, friends, church and fun. I be- lieve he is a leader.”
Miles Kemp, a Jefferson High School student, wrote: “As a young Black man, I would like to thank the per- son who inspires me. Dwanue Johnson, a City of Tampa Fire Lieutenant has been a con- stant role model of strength
and integrity in my life. He has encouraged my growth and desire to help others through his unselfishness and dedication to serve. As a Black man he has taught me to fight for my dreams and to give 110% to the goal at hand.”
Gustavo Carvacho of Aparicio-Levy Technical Col- lege stated: “At Aparicio-Levy Technical College, I started the ESOL Program last year. A new teacher, Darrin Williams, an African-Amer- ican, started his new career as well. Every day he started the class enthusiastic and excited about doing what he loves, teaching English to students who are learning English as their second language. His enthusiasm everyday moti- vates me to come to class 4 days as week for 4 consecu- tive hours per day.”
In the Performance Art category, the winners were: Chloe Waddington of Hammond Elementary School. She wrote, “The Ryan Nece Foundation empowers kids to become leaders in their community...through volunteering and leadership programs.”
Aurora Stukey of Or- ange Grove Middle Magnet School: “Mr. Woodrow has inspired me in many ways. He has taught me how to be an amazing dancer and person. He always pushes me over the limit so I can understand...”
And, the winner on the high school level was Brit- nee Blake of Blake Magnet High School: “I wanted to in- corporate Mrs. Mitchell’s struggles and accomplish- ments...but to highlight how
