When the new school year begins in a few weeks, students will be excited about starting school. And, they look forward to rejoining their peers after summer vacation.
Mya Scott will be especially happy return- ing to Burns Middle School. At the end of last school term, Mya was a 6th grade student. But next month, she will join the 8th grade class at the school.
She was allowed to enroll in the Hillsbor- ough County Public School District’s STEP (an acronym for Student Trajectory Enhancement Program), Program.
It is designed to help students who failed a grade between kindergarten and 6th grade. The student must also pass 6th grade in order to qualify. Mya failed 4th grade.
However, her father, Marcus Scott said, “She took summer classes to see if she would qualify and she did. She felt bad because she was older than the other kids. Now, she is going to be with her peers and she is super ex- cited.”
Mya is the youngest of 5 children born to Scott and his wife, Mrs. Alicia Scott. She is a Tampa native and enjoys reading, drawing, and gymnastics. She also plays the violin and

He believed in people of all ages obtaining an education.
“The idea of the Foundation is to help un- derprivileged individuals and families to be successful. I love doing community service and helping those in need; especially to enhance their potential, well-being, and quality of life. Being an advocate for Education, I continued my grandfather's legacy, his commitment to give back to the community, and his admira- tion toward education.”
In his honor, volunteers, supporters and the Jackson Educational Foundation, Inc. will distribute backpacks, school supplies, lunch, snacks, also provide games, and prizes to un- derprivileged families. We are striving to pro- vide backpacks and supplies to students living in the Tampa community.
