Jay Z Says This Is The ‘Genius Thing’ He Did When Starting Out In The Music Business
Shonda Rhimes Inks Podcast Deal With iHeartMedia
Hit-making TV writer and producer Shonda Rhimes is jumping into the podcast game in a much bigger way.
Rhimes’ Shondaland pro- duction company announced a three-year pact with iHeart- Media to launch Shondaland Audio, which will produce a slate of original podcasts to be released as part of the iHeart- Podcast Network.
Rhimes will oversee devel- opment and Sandie Bailey, Shondaland chief digital and design officer, will manage day-

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has had nothing short of a record- setting career: In June, Forbes dubbed Carter the first hip- hop artist to become a billion- aire.
But there was one thing in particular that Carter did early in his career that he later called a “genius” move.
“In the beginning, we went to every single label and every single label shut their door on us,” Carter said at the 2010 Forbes 400 summit, referring to himself and his then-busi- ness partners Damon Dash

and Kareem Burke.
“The genius thing that we did
was we didn’t give up. We used that ‘what do they know’ ap-
proach. We didn’t give up at that point.”
Instead, Carter, Dash and Burke, started their own label, called Roc-A-Fella Records, in 1994. Carter re- leased his debut album “Rea- sonable Doubt” on Roc-A-Fella in 1996. Though sales started slow, the album caught the at- tention of label executives.
“I think that was the genius thing we did. We started sell- ing our own CDs and built our own buzz,” Carter said in 2010. “Then, the record com- panies came back to us.”
‘Barney’ Will Get The Reboot Treatment With Film Adaptation From Mattel, Daniel Kaluuya
A new Barney movie is in the works from Mattel Films and Get Out actor Daniel Kaluuya. The project joins the growing list of Mattel proper- ties being adapted into feature- length films, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Master of the Universe. No studio is attached to the live-action film yet, but Kaluuya will produce, in col- laboration with Rowan Riley, Amandla Crichlow, and Val- paraiso Pictures.
“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our child- hoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misun- derstood,” Kaluuya told The

Hollywood Reporter. “We’re excited to explore this com- pelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”
Issa Rae Launches New Label With Atlantic Records
Having already conquered the world of television, Inse- cure star and creator Issa Rae is making moves in the music business.
It was announced Friday that Raedio — a record label re- cently formed by Rae — has entered a joint venture with At- lantic Records that is kicking off with the release of the sin- gle “Kinda Love” by Haitian- American singer-rapper TeaMarrr.
Billed as an “audio every- where company,” Raedio will extend its influence across media by aligning its roster of talent with film and TV proj- ects, commercials, podcasts and more, according to a press

release. Rae says the label was inspired by her history of cen- tering the work of “female, in- dependent, or Los Angeles-based artists” like SZA, Saweetie and Jazmine Sullivan on Insecure as well as earlier projects.
