“Around the World in 180 Days” isn’t just a book title, it’s Tampa resident Tim Booker’s life – sort of.
Booker recently wrap- ped up a 10-month jaunt over the globe, traveling to a total of 30 countries on six conti- nents with a friend.
A website, www.visasand- vistas.com, documents their incredible journey with blog posts and pictures of exotic places and cool adventures like going on safari in Africa, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and walking along the Great Wall in China.
“I’ve always been a road tripper,” he said. “Within the states, I’ve been a lot of places.”
Booker had never been outside the United States until 2014 when he visited Mexico.
The exposure to another culture and cuisine in a differ- ent country was so remark- able, it prompted Booker to consider taking a much longer, more extensive vaca- tion.
Almost immediately upon his return home, he and his friend began planning their

     global excursion.
Trip costs were estimated
at $30,000. To finance it, the pair began saving and built up points using credit cards.
By last November, they’d reached their goal. Booker quit his job as a database ana- lyst and hit the road.
The first stop was South America, where they visited Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. A family emergency around Christmas required they return home and stay put until February.
After things stabilized, they resumed their trip and headed west to Asia, stopping
in Japan, China, India, and Cambodia before moving along to Africa.
Botswana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa were among the countries visited on the continent before heading to Europe, Booker said.
Part of the fun was enjoy- ing the cuisine and other unique characteristics of each country, like horse sashimi in Japan or the rich fish dishes in Senegal, Booker said.
Traveling anywhere in the world these days requires making safety a priority. Booker said he’s adopted some practices to help him stay out of harm’s way, in- cluding staying on top of both world and local news and avoiding places that make him uncomfortable.
There were some close calls: a terrorist attack in Barcelona occurred two weeks after Booker’s visit and his trip to Mali was cancelled after an attack at a tourist re- sort left five dead.
Unrest in certain areas of the world, however, shouldn’t stop anyone from fulfilling their desire to see it, Booker said. “You can’t be scared,” he said. “Let your common sense guide you.”
Booker said he’s already planning his next trip outside the country.
“I just need to reset and save back up,” he said “I still have plenty to see.”

Planning a trip around the world or just to one country? Here’re some tips:
Get a passport and learn which countries require a visa to enter.
Start slowly. Identify a few countries you’d like to visit and learn about its cultures and cuisines.
Use tour guides in places where you’re not comfortable getting around on your own.
