Police To Offer Active Shooter Awareness Seminar

Recently, the news has been filled with incidents of a person going into a location and opening fire on those in- side. In an attempt to edu- cate the public in the event they find themselves in this situation, the Tampa Police Department is hosting a sem- inar to teach residents how to survive an active shooter in- cident.
The Seminar will take place on the following dates and at the following loca- tions: June 12, at Hillsbor- ough Community College, Dale Mabry Campus in the Student Services Audito- rium.
The second Seminar will be held on Monday, June 18th, at Ragan Park Commu- nity Center, 1200 E. Lake Av- enue.

take place on Thursday, June 21st, at the Tampa Police Ath- letic League, 1924 W. Diana Street. All of the Seminars take place from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said, “The Safety Socials are just one of the ways we’re working to ensure our community has a variety of avenues for collab- orating with law enforce-
ment.
“This is a great opportu-
nity for police officers and community members to work with each other, and learn from each other,” Chief Dugan said.
The focus on the Depart- ment of Homeland Security’s “Run. Hide. Fight.” training.
The “Run. Hide. Fight.” seminars will kick-off the po- lice department’s Commu- nity Safety Social initiative. The department plans to host these interactive socials on a quarterly basis to provide community members with safety training and informa- tion on crime trends in their neighborhoods.
Those in attendance will learn strategies, tips, and how to develop a plan for handling an active shooter incident.
The goal of the Seminar is to better prepare the Tampa community for tragic events, such as mass shootings. It is open to all ages. However, parental guidance is sug- gested as parts of the presen- tation may contain sensitive images and language.
In addition, an American Sign Language interpreter will be available at the semi- nar on June 21.
The Seminars are free to members of the public. How- ever, space is limited at all three Seminars. Participants are strongly encouraged to pre-register online at: www.Tampagov.net/TPD- Safety-Social.
Safety Camp Targets Parents, Teachers, And Mentors

On Saturday, June 16th, a Safety Camp will be held for parents, teachers and men- tors. The camp is designed to provide answers to those who face many types of chal- lenges with youngsters, but don’t know where to seek so- lutions.
The Parent Safety Camp is being presented by the AT&T Pioneers of Tampa Bay.
It will be held at the Po- lice Athletic League, 1924 W. Diana Street, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Camp is free and open to the public. However, pre-registration is required.
Ed Narain, Regional Director of AT&T will intro- duce the speakers. Mr.

Narain is a former state representative.
After a panel discussion, those in attendance will at- tend break-out sessions with the speakers to discuss top- ics in-depth and obtain an- swers to questions.
Narain said, “We are fortunate that so many agen- cies and leaders in Tampa Bay are coming together to help empower parents to keep their children safer.”
Andrew Hall, President of AT&T Pioneers Tampa Bay said, “We wanted to pro- vide a forum that will help Tampa parents be better equipped to address chal- lenges with their teens and build stronger families. The financial support from AT&T Pioneers means that all par- ents and mentors can at- tend.”
During the camp, local experts will discuss such topics as, bullying, dis- tracted driving, drugs and al- cohol, human trafficking, and school safety.
Some of the agencies par- ticipating in the event in- clude: the FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Tampa Police De- partment, Hillsborough County Anti-Bullying Advi- sory Committee, and Steve Augello, Advocate Against Distracted Driving.
It is being sponsored by AT&T Pioneers, Yob Family Foundation, Zoo Tampa, Adviuence, Athletics & Causes, and PDQ.
