It’s a milestone that by all accounts didn’t have to happen this soon.
The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 eclipsed 700,000 late Friday — a number greater than the population of Boston. The last 100,000 deaths oc- curred during a time when vac- cines — which overwhelmingly prevent deaths, hospitaliza- tions and serious illness — were available to any American
over the age of 12.
Florida suffered by far the
most death of any state during that period, with the virus killing about 17,000 residents since the middle of June. Texas was second with 13,000 deaths. The two states account for 15% of the country’s popu- lation, but more than 30% of the nation’s deaths since the nation crossed the 600,000 threshold.
According to Tampa Police, officers were investigating an unrelated shooting that had taken place at N. 15th Street and E. 113th Avenue when they re- ceived a call of another shoot- ing nearby.
This shooting happened near the intersection of N. 11th Street and E. Bougainvillea Av- enue at 7:10 p.m., Friday, in- volved three men.
The three men had all been shot and were trans- ported to a local hospital. A 27- year-old man died as a result of
his injuries. The second victim was listed in serious condition and the third victim was listed in stable condition. The two surviving victims were ages 19 and 20 years old.
Police said the shooting does not appear to be random. No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.
Anyone with any informa- tion about the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS or online at www.crimestop- perstb.com.
