Gunman Kills 50 At Gay Bar In Orlando; It’s The Worst Mass Shooting In U. S. History
Film About Cong. Shirley Chisholm In Production
Cong. Shirley Chisholm was historic. Anika Noni Rose will pro- duce and star in film about her life.
Shirley Chisholm was the first Black candidate to run for pres- ident and was the first African American elected to Congress.
Omar Mateen, 29, killed 50 people at a popular gay bar in Orlando.
ORLANDO, FL --- The gun- man behind a suspected ter- rorist attack that killed 50 people at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando is believed to be a U.S. citizen of Afghan heritage named as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man from Florida.
He is alleged to have opened fire at the Pulse Club in the early hours of Sunday, taking hostages, killing many and hospitalizing 53. Raising the alarm in the early hours of Sunday morning, staff at the venue posted on Facebook:
“Everyone get out of pulse and keep running”. .
Orlando confirmed police said the shooting was being treated as an “act of domestic terrorism” and had resulted in mass casualties, urging people to stay away from the area.
Several news outlets identi- fied the gunman as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, Florida. The FBI said it had a “positive identifi- cation” of the shooter though it has not yet released a name as it is in the process of notify- ing his family.
The gunman was killed dur- ing a shootout with police, as they broke into the nightclub
to rescue 30 people held hostage there. No motive for the attack has been offered by police.
Authorities also believe he is part of the radical Islam movement, although they do not know if it was an organ- ized attack or if he was a lone wolf. Authorities also believe Mateen specifically targeted a gay club.
Mateen's father told NBC News, "This has nothing to do with religion." He says his son became angry after seeing 2 men kissing a few months ago in Miami, and he speculates that could have triggered his decision to kill.
NATIONAL ----Because be- fore Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, there was Shirley Chisholm.
Tony Award-winning actress, Anika Noni Rose will pro- duce as well as star in a film about Shirley Chisholm, the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination and the first major-party Black candidate
for President of the United States.
In 1968, she became the first African-American elected to Congress.
The film was first announced in 2010 with Viola Davis at- tached to the project, but a pro- ducer of the project has confirmed Rose’s attachment to the project, which is cur- rently in development.
MIDLOYTHIAN, VA ---The difference in the bias against Black children is not more clear than with the differing results in Google image searches for “three black teenagers” and “three white teenagers.”
Type “three black teenagers” into a Google image search, and a bunch of menacing po- lice mugshots turns up. “Three white teenagers” results in smiling young folks who look to be selling Bibles door-to- door.
Kabir Alli, an 18-year-old from Midlothian, Va., heard about the “three black teenagers” challenge and posted a video clip on Twitter last week with his results.
“I had actually heard about this search from one of my friends and just wanted to see everything for myself. I didn’t think it would actually be true,” Alli told USA Today. “When I saw the results I was nothing short of shocked.”

Alli’s Twitter post has been retweeted more than 70,000 times, and the hashtag #three- blackteenagers has been used to discuss the pervasive visual anti-black bias in American media and culture today.
From #IfIWereGunned- Down to the recent conversa- tion about how convicted sexual assault felon Brock
Turner was only given six months in state jail, this is not a new issue.
Google—which employs at least two trillion searches per year—says it’s merely reflect- ing back the biases that exist in society (i.e., how people tag and describe photos) and is not at fault. Alli says he does not believe Google is racist.
This limited edition watch is now on sale.
