DADDY TAUGHT US ‘YOUR WORD IS YOUR BOND’
As reported, “Numerous promises made this election period by di- verse individuals running for political positions across this nation al- ready proved not to be true. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a world where “our words are our bond.”
Michelle Obama spoke in 2008: “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re going to do.”
In the Black Oral Tradition, our Daddy not only ‘told us,’ but ‘showed us’ this powerful truth about being honest and having moral worth. Your word is your bond!
For example, if we asked Daddy to loan you some money, he would say sternly, “Just remember, your word ought to be your bond.”
In other words, he expected you to keep the promise to pay him back and on time. Likewise, if you ran into a problem and possibly becoming past due, you could ask him for an extension of time to repay the debt.
Even so, we learned a life-changing lesson about agreeing to some- thing verbally or promising to do something for someone and keeping the promise. Your word is your bond!
From the beginning of time, God has always stood true to His Word. Someone estimated that there are 8,000 promises in the Bible. Many remember this ole hymn, Standing on the Promises and a testimony to tell: “Standing on the promises I cannot fall, Listening every morning to the Spirit’s call, Resting in my Savior, As my, all in all, Standing on the promises of God.”
Assuredly, you can be confident that God will fulfill all His promises to you and to all those faithful to Him who may live after you. Your word is your bond!
Surely, we thank God for our Daddy and a Mama, who taught and showed us how to trust, believe, and keep the faith in Him.
The questions posed to all, is YOUR word YOUR bond? Can God de- pend on you?
Good night Daddy (and Mama), we will see you in the morning!
Your living legacies, Leatricia, Earliest, Valretha, Maggie, Norma, Michele, and Juanita (Tampa); Thelma and Annette (QA Lesson Learned Quincy).
