Roommate Arrested In Stabbing Death
Man Shot While Playing Dominoes
   Armed Assailants Shoot Woman In Leg
 A 27-year-old woman was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the leg. The incident took place at her apartment late Tuesday night.
The victim, identified as Ms. Dekiemah Hicks, told police she was carrying her baby in a car seat and was about to enter her home in the Oakhurst Apartment Complex, when she was approached by two men wearing ski masks.
One of the men displayed a
gun and forced her into the apartment. The suspects de- manded to know where “it” was and said, “I know you know where it is.”
One of the men shot Ms. Hicks once in the leg and the two fled the scene. She was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where her injury was classified as serious, but not life-threatening. The infant was not harmed and was left in the care of a neighbor.
   A 29-year-old man was shot Tuesday night while in Sul- phur Springs. He was trans- ported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, Wen- dell Preston was playing dominoes in the driveway of a residence in the 8200 block of N. 11th Street. Four Black men walked up to where he was play- ing and one of them allegedly shot at Preston several times.
The suspects then grabbed a backpack that was sitting on the ground and ran away. They fled the scene in a vehicle they had parked down the street from where the shooting oc- curred, police said.
No additional information was available. However, police said the shooting does not ap- pear to be a random act of vio- lence.
 Detectives with the Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Of- fice have arrested a 26-year-old Ruskin man. He was wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of an- other man.
According to police, a 9- 1-1 call was received at 5:14 p.m., Monday, in reference to a stabbing. When deputies arrived at the scene, they dis- covered that 22-year-old De- rick Avila was suffering from apparent stab wounds.
Avila was transported to South Bay Hospital, where he later died.
During the investigation, detectives learned that Avila and his roommate, Angel Calix, became engaged in an argument while in the kitchen at their residence at 1107 Windton Oak Drive, in Ruskin.

leged to have attempted to stab Avila in the neck and chest area. He then report- edly dropped two of the knives, grabbed Avila by the shirt, and stabbed him once in the chest.
Avila went to the home to a neighbor’s house for help. When deputies arrived at the scene, Avila was lying in a pool of blood in the neighbor’s driveway, police said.
Calix fled the area on foot. He was taken into cus- tody Wednesday night.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warrant in a case where a woman’s purse was stolen. Police have identified one of the two people involved in the crime.
According to police, the incident took place on the af- ternoon of September 30th. The victim was shopping at Publix, 5371 Ehrlich Road. She left her purse unattended and someone removed it from the shopping cart. The victim was able to obtain the license plate of the suspect vehicle.
The same day as the theft, an unidentified person, pre- sumably the passenger in the suspect vehicle, used the vic- tim’s credit card at the Wawa, 8325 N. Florida Avenue.
Detectives have identified the driver of the vehicle as 17- year-old Carnell Hall, of Tampa. They have issued a warrant for his arrest on a grand theft charge. The sec- ond individual, who police believe used the card, has not

been identified.
He is described as being
between the ages of 17 and 20, with a medium build, and short dreadlocks.

 A St. Petersburg man who reportedly exchanged gunfire with police early Wednesday died. The shooting took place near 30th Street and 6th Av- enue, South, around 1 a.m.
According to police, a patrol officer observed a white pick-up truck that had been involved in an armed carjacking Monday. The vehicle appeared to have a flat tire and the driver was mov- ing slowly.
The officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver of the truck turned into the alleyway and the patrol cars followed.
Once he turned into the alley, the driver allegedly jumped out of the truck and began firing at the officers. The officers returned fire, and the suspect was hit during the ex- change of gunfire.
The suspect, later identified as Timothy Earl Jackson, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Jackson later died as a result of his injuries.
Jackson was released from the Florida Department of Cor- rections on August 2, 2017. He had served 8 years and 9 months for robbery, police said.
The names of the officers in- volved in the shooting have not been released. Both officers were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.
