Hillsborough County School Board
The first African Ameri- can to serve on the Hillsbor- ough County Board of Commissioners was E. L. Bing. Mr. Bing was ap- pointed to serve on the board.
REV. A. LEON LOWRY
Rev. A. Leon Lowry, Sr., was the first African American to serve on the Hillsborough School Board. He was elected in 1976, and served for 16 years.
MRS. DORIS ROSS REDDICK
Mrs. Doris Ross Red- dick was elected to serve on the School Board in 1992. She was the first African Ameri- can female to serve on the board. Two years later, Mrs. Ross Reddick became the first Black woman unani- mously elected to serve as its Chairperson. She served for 3 terms, retiring in 2004.
MRS. DORETHA EDGECOMB
Mrs. Doretha Edge- comb followed Mrs. Ross Reddick on the board. She served three terms before de- ciding t0 retire.
MS. TAMARA SHAMBURGER
Elected to serve on the School Board, Ms. Sham- burger served one term, from 2016 to 2020.
HENRY ‘SHAKE’ WASHINGTON
Washington was elected to serve on the board in No- vember 2020. He is the sec- ond African American man to serve no the board.
