Local
‘Ladies Of Distinction’ Host Monthly Talent Event
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Lisa Hicks and Ladies of Distinc- tion have taken it upon themselves to reestablish a venue for mature audi- ences.
Using the name, “Memory Lane,” Ms. Hicks, who is coordinating the event, wants to showcase local artists with talent, and also work within the community to find new talent.
On Saturday, September 24th at the Rose Heights Elks Lodge #318 in Lakeland, the next edition of “Mem- ory Lane” will be featured with doors opening at 9 p. m.
“If you listen to the radio, you know that there’s little or no air time given to the music mature, older people enjoy. That’s why we decided to fea- ture music from as far back as the 1960s, and present them to the public in a unique style.
“We’re going to do a video disc jockey where patrons will have the opportunity to dance, listen to the music, or watch the oversized video screen that will feature the DJ.”
Ms. Hicks said they’ve held two events so far, and attendance is grow- ing.
“We’ve established an age line of 25 and over, and we’ve also put in place a strict dress code.
“We’re trying to get people to come out and enjoy themselves in a secure

and entertaining environment. The fact is, we are in desperate need of an entertainment venue that caters to the older patrons.”
Ms. Hicks said patrons will notice quickly how serious they are about their dress code when they see the se- curity force dressed in suits and ties.
“We hope this will grow into some- thing really big, and avail us to enter bigger venues as the interest grows.
“It’s very important that the older population have a place to be enter- tained, and be able to enjoy them- selves without any disruptions going on.”
FYI
Tampa Free Tree Program
The City of Tampa’s Parks and Recreation Department has started a “Free Tree Pro- gram,” and the opportunity is open for homeowners within the city limits.
All of the trees will be planted and will remain planted on city rights-of-way. The homeowner has to commit to watering the trees for a full year, and no trees will be planted on private property.
There is a wide selection of trees with some for planting under power lines and open areas, and others for planting in open areas with no overhead restrictions.
All requests must be electronically submitted through the online request form. If you don’t have access to the internet and require assistance, call (813) 274-7733.
Please visit www.tampagov.net/Free Tree to complete the online form and begin the process of securing your free tree. You will also get an opportunity to see the array of trees available.
