Gospel Music Workshop Of America Tampa Bay Chapter Celebrates 23 Years
TAMPA BAY CHAPTER GOSPEL MUSIC WORKSHOP OF AMERICA
The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) will cel- ebrate 23 years of music min- istry. The 23rd anniversary celebration will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016, beginning at 7 p. m.
The celebration of praise will be held at the First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N. 29th St., Tampa (33610). Rev. Dr. S. Evan Burrows, pastor.
Gospel Music Workshop of America was founded by the late Rev. James Cleve- land. Currently, Carlton Brown is the Chapter Repre- sentative.
Since its inception, the choir has performed at nu- merous events within the
community and across the United States. They have served noted gospel singers from around the world as back-up singers. They trav- eled to Birmingham, Alabama in July for the National Con- vention.
This choir does more than sing. They are very active in the community, having partic- ipated in such events as feed- ing the homeless, providing Christmas baskets for needy families; participating in ‘Paint Your Heart Out” cam- paigns and providing funds and household items and clothes for victims of fires.
The choir also adopted a family and provided food and gifts for them during the Christmas holidays.
Special guest on the an- niversary program will be the GMWA Birmingham Mass Choir, Hillsborough Commu- nity Mass Choir, Joshua Gen- eration, and Chosen from Rivers of Life Church.
The public is invited to come out and join the choir as they give God all the honor and glory in song service.
Anyone interested in be- coming a member of the Tampa Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America is welcome. Rehearsals are held each month on Saturdays before the first and third Sun- daysat5p.m.

During the month of Febru- ary, various organizations host programs to pay tribute to the accomplishment of African Americans. The Robert W. Saunders Public Library Foun- dation, Inc., will recognize the organizations that make those tributes possible.
On Monday, September 19th, the Robert W. Saunders Library Foundation, in con- junction with Hillsborough County, will honor the City of Tampa Black History Commit- tee and the Hillsborough County Black Heritage Cele- bration Committee.
The presentations take place at the Robert W. Saun- ders Public Library, 1505 N. Nebraska Avenue, who co- sponsors the event. The pro- gram will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Fred Hearns, Black His- tory Experience Coordinator of the Robert W. Saunders Li- brary Foundation said this week, the “Lamp Of Knowledge Award” will be presented to Mrs. Celeste Gibbons Peo- ples, Chairman of the City of Tampa Black History Commit- tee and to Albert Coleman, Chairman of the Hillsborough County Black Heritage Cele- bration Committee. Both of the organizations have hosted pro-
grams in Hillsborough County for more than 20 years.
During the program, both committees will present their history, current programs, and future plans.
Hearns further said, “Those who attend the pro- grams presented by these com- mittees see the finished product. However, they are not aware of the work and dedica- tion by members of the com- mittees that make these programs possible.”
“The Black History Experi- ence (BHE) Series was created to honor those in our commu- nity who help preserve the his- tory and accomplishments of Blacks in Hillsborough County. We seek to recognize those who keep Black History Alive,” he said.
The program is free and open to the public. Family members, friends, and mem- bers of the community are in- vited to attend the program and visit one of the few African American Public Libraries and Cultural Arts Centers in the Southeastern United States, Hearns said.
