State Elected Officials, Community Leaders Announce Filing Of Anti-Slavery Resolution
TALLAHASSEE, FL – As we go to press on Wednesday, Oct. 20, Representative Dianne Hart (D- Tampa) and Sena- tor Bobby Powell (D-West Palm Beach) are holding a press conference in the Ro- tunda to announce the filing of a joint resolution to officially outlaw involuntary servitude in the State’s Constitution. They are joined by community leaders. If passed by the legis- lature the measure will be placed on the ballot for Florida’s voters to officially re- move the vestiges of slavery from our state.
Representative Dianne Hart said:
“Slavery is often thought to be a dark piece of history from long ago, but truly it is alive
and well here in the State of Florida, through the continu- ous practice of involuntary servitude in our state’s prisons. I am happy to work with Sen- ator Powell and community leaders to move the State of Florida into the 21st century. I believe that the people of Florida are ready to remove the vestiges of slavery from our state once and for all.”
Senator Bobby Powell
agreed, stating:
“Prison labor is a vestige of
slavery and a dark time in American history. The contin- ual use of prison labor, even amidst the dangerous COVID- 19 pandemic, is cruel and in- humane. This is our chance to finally put an end to a shame- ful centuries’ long practice and
to be an example to other states. Prison labor is revenue under the guise of rehabilita- tion and here in the state of Florida we should always value people over profit.”
Community leader, Pastor Kenneth Sharpton Glas- gow issued the following statement:
“We are very pleased that
Representative Diane Hart and Senator Powell have taken on this endeavor. To finally bring an end to slav- ery and slave labor in America. Our hope and prayers are that other law makers in other states will follow and do the same so that we can bring an end to the exception clause in the 13th amendment of the United States Constitution.”

On Saturday, October 30th, a local church, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Health Department, will serve as a host site for the COVID-19 Booster Vaccinations. The event will take place from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m.
This marks the second time that College Hill Church Of God In Christ, 6414 N. 30th Street, Tampa, FL 33610, will serve in this capacity. The first event took place in March.
Residents interested in ob- taining the vaccines are asked to pre-register on or before Oc- tober 29, 2021. This will insure that enough doses are avail- able.
Supt. Charles Davis, Sen- ior Church Pastor, said he be- lieves it is important for a church to minister to the phys- ical, mental, and spiritual health of the community.
“God is not only concerned with our spiritual health, but our overall well-being.
“It is important for our com- munity to have access to the medicines God has allowed the doctors and scientists to create to keep us safe.”
For individuals who are wishing to obtain a booster must provide proof of having received the first doses, 2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna, or 1 dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The proof is the card

Individuals who have not taken the original vaccine can receive the first dose (of Pfizer or Moderna) on Saturday; or the one dose of Johnson & Johnson. Those wishing to ob- tain the first dose must bring identification. All three of the approved vaccination shots will be available.
