MIKE TROUT
Mike Trout of the Los An- geles Angels has been named the American League MVP.
The announcement was made on MLB Network after voting from members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Bettsfin- ished second, and Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was third.
"Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be the best player in everything I did, didn't matter what sport," Trout said in an ESPN interview after being named MVP. "But obviously, you work hard just to be in the conversation.
Steve Smith Sr. Reveals He 'Bumped Heads' With Cam Newton In Carolina
STEVE SMITH, SR. AND CAM NEWTON
There were rumblings when the Carolina Panther- sreleased wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. in 2014 that his strained relationship with quarterback Cam Newton played a role in the decision.
Smith and Newton, as well as the organization, have shied away from that topic.
But in the NFL Network's
"Steve Smith: A Football Life"
that airs Friday at 9 p.m., Car- olina's all-time leading re- ceiver and others give credence to the rumblings.
"We bumped heads for the obvious reason," Smith said in a preview of the show pro- vided to media outlets. "He's the first overall pick and he was a star where he was. I was 31 years old. I had three kids. So we were two people in two different phases of their life."

Ray Lewis Calls Out Joe Flacco For Lacking Passion For The Game
Ray Lewis pub- licly questioned the passion of Joe Flacco on Thurs- day when asked why the Baltimore Ravens' quarter- back has been so in- consistent this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans admitted last Wednesday that he should have thought through the timing of his protest of President-elect Donald Trump a bit better. He sat during the national an- them during the Bucs' annual Salute to Service game on Sunday, a day honoring ac- tive, reserve, retired and vet- eran service members. He said he never, ever meant to hurt them.
"If I had to do it over again, I would have done it differ- ently, but I would still use my platform to help," said Evans, one day after changing course and announcing that he would be standing with his team- mates during the anthem from now on. He originally said that as long as Trump was president-elect he would not be participating in the na- tional anthem. "It was the Salute to Service game ... look- ing back on it, I probably would have do it a different
"Gifted? Ab-
solutely. Passionate about what he do? I've never seen that," Lewis told Fox Sports 1 on Thursday. "I don't know what that looks like."
What Lewis forgets to mention is that Flacco was the one who carried Lewis and the Ravens to a Super Bowl title four years ago with his scintillating playoff run.
Flacco, who currently ranks 29th in the NFL in passer rating, has been criti- cized over the years for not being emotional, including a few times by Lewis.
Flacco and Lewis, who were teammates for five sea-
sons (2008-12), couldn't have been more different in terms of their approach to the game. Flacco has always been stoic, and Lewis was vocal and fiery.
"I don't know how many times you'll hear somebody just really go out on a limb to defend he's the greatest team- mate I've ever had," Lewis said. "I don't know how many times you'll hear that. Maybe it's because his personality just isn't that personality. He's not a rah-rah guy. He won't say much. But, in the game of football, there has to be some burning fire behind you."

way."
"It hits home for a lot of
people. This city of Tampa is big in the military," Evans said. "I know I hurt a lot of people by doing what I did. I want to apologize again to the people who were really af- fected by what I did, and to the people who are disap- pointed in my decision to stand with my teammates: don't worry. From now on, I'm gonna continue to use my voice and my platform for mi- norities' rights and I'm gonna continue to help the minority
