 A HOPEFUL MOTHER
  MRS. LEILA SMITH WILLIAMS
Most recently, while sort- ing through pictures and mem- oirs, a picture dated Saturday, August 3, 2002, rekindled the excitement and fulfillment of keeping hope alive. It was taken at the dedication of the new Middleton High School.
What a happy day for Tiger Nation and our Mama, too! She remembered the school burn- ing, closing and reclassifica- tion, court actions and protests, numerous setbacks, and school board challenges.
Our parents prayed, en- couraged, and supported us in whatever was our chosen work, life goals, struggles, and resulting choices. A Hopeful Mother!
This week, we learned about another hopeful mother, Shyamala Gopalan, mother of Kamala Harris, whose life and political outlook was shaped by both parents.
As Joe Biden’s Vice-Presi- dential candidate, Harris said, “My mother used to say, don’t sit around and complain about things, do something. You may be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last.” A Hopeful Mother!
Like other candidates, Barack Obama’s stories told of his single mom waking him up a 5 a.m. to study. Bill Clinton told tales of his mother sup- porting the family after his fa- ther died in a car crash. Each told how their mothers helped
to shape their lives, views, and values, too. Looking over your life’s story, you will find your parents or mother, grand- mother, sister, or aunt who helped to shape your life, too. A Hopeful Mother!
In closing, the Rev. Stanley L. Walker, Pastor, Tabernacle M.B. Church, Tallahassee told the story about a young man who was preparing to leave the correctional institution after 3 years. He was excited about going home, seeing his mother, and eating her home cooking! With a smile, he added, his mother wrote him a letter each month and closed with the message, “I am waiting on you!” A Hopeful Mother!
Our Mama transitioned to her new home on Thursday, August 22, 2002.
As we celebrate her life and legacy, the Lord reminds us about the same message of hope that shaped our parents’ lives, too, “I am waiting on you.”
Yes, the Lord is waiting on each of us. Until He calls, the Apostle Paul affirms “May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” Romans 15:13.” A Hope- ful Mother!
Goodnight Mama, we will see you in the morning! From your children, Juanita, Leatri- cia, Earliest, Valretha, Maggie, Norma, and Michele; and the grandchildren.
