FSU QB Everett Golson Shines In Debut After Early Jitters
The Florida A&M Rat- tlers opened their regular season and the Alex Wood era Saturday with a 51-3 loss to the University of South Florida Bulls at Raymond James Stadium Saturday night.
Although FAMU ap- pears to have been blown out, the Rattlers displayed a good defense, keeping the Bulls at bay most of the first hall before fatigue set in.
Coach Wood felt the game provided an evalua- tion of several aspects of his team and realized they
still have a lot of work to do.
USF quarterback Quentin Flowers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in his sec- ond quarter start.
On one play, Flowers scrambled before finding D’Ernest Johnson for a 22-yard touchdown play. Flowers threw 45 yards to Johnson for another score with 1:16 left in the half.
Flowers also ran 29 yards for a score before turning the reigns over to backup Steven Bench.
TALLAHASSEE -- FSU quarterback Everett Golson trailed his teammates out of the tunnel onto Bobby Bow- den Field. He moved a little slower than everyone else, seeming to soak in the atmos- phere before his first game as the general of the Seminoles’ offense.
Golson, by design, took a while to get going in his debut for FSU. Once he did, how- ever, the graduate transfer from Notre Dame showed why coach Jimbo Fisher named him the starting signal caller after a tight battle with Sean Maguire during camp. Golson, a senior, went 19 of 25 passing for 302 yards in FSU’s victory over Texas State

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Veteran wide receiver Reg- gie Wayne, who signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots on Aug. 25, was released by the team Saturday.
Coach Bill Belichick called it a mutual decision.
"Obviously, Reggie's time here was brief, but it only confirmed what I already thought -- he is a true profes- sional who represents every positive attribute a player should emulate. Our parting was mutually agreed upon and I am personally grateful to have worked with one of the great NFL players of the past two decades."
Wayne asked for his re- lease from the team and the Patriots granted it, sources had told reporters. He would be willing to sign with an-

Saturday, and all four of his passing scores came in the second half.
“He threw the ball nicely. It was crisp, sharp. Ball came out of his hands very well,”
Fisher said. “He was precise in his decisions tonight. That's what I liked. He saw the field, he didn't hesitate, he saw the ball, it came out and he was accurate with the ball.”

Bucs Snag Five Players
The Tampa Bay Bucca- neers owned the No. 1 waiver claim position fol- lowing Saturday's cuts and utilized it well, snatching up five players.

other team but only in the right situation, a source said. Wayne's one-year con- tract with the Patriots had a maximum value of $2.8 mil- lion and included a $450,000 signing bonus. The 36-year- old said he picked the Patri- ots over other options for one primary reason: "I just want
to win, point-blank."
"The only thing I can do is
let my work speak for itself," Wayne said Aug. 25 when asked how much he had to offer. "I know what I can do. I know what I can bring to the table. ... Whoever the naysayers are, just watch me work."
