Florida State University Care Program Hosts Information Session
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Sunday, October 1st, a representative from Florida State University will host a Care Program. The event will take place in the cafeteria of Cahoon-Van Buren K-8 School, 8715 N. 22nd Street, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.
The purpose of the event is to provide information to students on how to apply and get accepted into colleges, universities and the FSU Care Program. It is free and stu- dents and parents are en- couraged to attend.
Ross Anderson, Com- munity & Educational Advo- cate Liaison for the Hillsborough County School District said, “We will also be providing other valuable in- formation, such as high school graduation require- ments, how to navigate through the educational sys- tem, the test dates for the ACT and SAT tests, prepara- tion session dates, and schol- arship information.
“Many students attend class and when time comes to graduate, learn that they are missing a required class or must take the ACT or SAT in their senior year. We hope to provide information so the students know exactly what classes they should be taking and to encourage them to
take the required tests while in lower grades. If they don’t pass the first time, they will have other opportunities,” he said.
Summer Bridge Program
The Care Summer Bridge Program provides a compre- hensive program designed to ease the transition from high school to college while build- ing a strong academic foun- dation, he said.
Applicants selected to participate in the summer program will be first-genera- tion college students from socio-economically disadvan- taged backgrounds who have demonstrated a strong desire to succeed. The Care Summer Bridge Program is open to Florida residents who are ei- ther U. S. citizens or perma- nent residents of the United States.
The requirements for the program include a minimum 3.0 weighted academic GPA, 980 SAT total and/or 19 ACT Composite. The student must also complete the minimum academic courses required by the State of Florida.
Anderson said, “The 417 students who enrolled in the 2017 Care Summer Bridge Program represent all regions of the state. Broward, Dade, Duval, Palm Beach, and Or- ange Counties have the most
representatives on that list. We need Hillsborough County included on that list.”
The deadline to submit an application for the FSU Care Summer Bridge Program is
November 1, 2017. For more information contact Ander- son at (813) 273-7074.
