New York Mayor Unveils Plan To Renovate Notorious Rikers Island
What were you doing at 10-year-olds?
Shelden Gibbs is doing kid stuff too, but he has also jump started a fashion acces- sory line on the side.
Designing at least five ties a day, this now 11-year-old does all the designing, preparing of raw materials and sewing the final product under the watchful eye of his mom.
Shelden's entrepreneur- ial spirit was inspired when he realized the options for bow ties in designs he liked was very scarce. Now, he loves not only wearing his own product, but designing it
as well. He calls it his "pas- sion."
Now that business is boomin', Shelden and his "momager" says Classic Knot is looking to hire their first employees to help keep up with the heavy demand and faster turn around rate.
In the meantime, they're receiving a lot of help from family and friends. Shelden even shared that some of his classmates want to work for him.
In the meantime, you can order a necktie, bowtie and/or a matching handker- chief from the Classic Knot company website.
NEW YORK — While many criminal justice reform ac- tivists believe that the only way to address the horrific condi- tions at Rikers Island is to have it shut down, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio thinks otherwise. According to the New York Daily News, instead of shuttering the correctional facility, he will unveil a plan to renovate Rikers Island.
Officials say the mayor’s plan includes resuming construc- tion on a controversial new jail on the island that has been stalled since he took office, along with the roughly more than $1 billion dollars worth of improvements on the island included in his 10-year prelim-

inary budget.
Advocates and other elected
officials say the only way to fix Rikers is to tear the place down and scatter modern jails in neighborhoods across the city – an idea staunchly opposed by some vocal groups in the com-
munities that would be af- fected.
Aside from the horrendous conditions inside of the facility, many criminal justice reform advocates say that Rikers Is- land should be closed down due to the population decrease in the city’s jails, reports the outlet.
Under his plan, the mayor will reportedly allocate $170 million to rebuild the Horizon center located in the Bronx to move young inmates off of Rik- ers Island.
At Rikers, he plans to add two new schools, two wings that will house 700 beds, and a mental health facility for in- mates.

NEW YORK CITY —- The Baltimore white supremacist who went to the Big Apple to kill Black people told police he thought he would get a thrill by slaughtering a young person — but was instead left in a confused “daze” after re- alizing he took the life of an old can collector, law-en- forcement sources said Sun- day.
“He said he wished he had did it to somebody younger,” a source told New York Post. “Once he did it, he expected a rush but he didn’t get it. Then he was just walking around in a daze.”
After Army veteran James Harris Jackson was done plunging his 18-inch sword
into the chest and back of 66- year-old Timothy Caugh- man — a beloved autograph collector and trash recycler — he apparently made a pit stop. He went to the library.
Jackson is charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime.
Jackson claimed to have picked New York because he wanted to garner as much media attention as possible. The only reason he turned himself in, was because he spotted a mixed-race couple and was afraid he would also attack them, as well.
Jackson’s attorney has told prosecutors that he has “obvious psychological is- sues.”
WASHINGTON, D. C. —- An Instagram post claiming 14 black and Latino girls went missing within 24 hours in Washington, D.C. spread like wildfire on social media, prompting a huge outcry.
The hashtag #missingdcgirls soon began trending on Twit- ter, with concerned citizens de- manding the police department give due attention to the case and condemning the mainstream media for not shedding much light on the topic because the victims be- longed to minority communi- ties.
However prior to the na- tional attention and outcry, Washington Metropolitan Po- lice Department's new com- mander, Chanel Dickerson, made a pledge: Let's find our missing girls, 2 months ago.
Now, as the department
posts profiles of missing Black and Latina girls in the nation's capital on its Twitter feed al- most daily, members of the Congressional Black Caucus are calling for a federal investi- gation.
In a letter last Tuesday, the lawmakers asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James Comey to "devote the resources neces- sary to determine whether these developments are an anomaly, or whether they are indicative of an underlying trend that must be addressed."
Sessions was briefed on the issue Friday, Justice De- partment spokesperson Sarah Isgur Flores said.
"The Attorney General is aware of the reports and is looking into the issue," she said.
The FBI declined to com-
ment on the matter.
On Friday, D.C.’s Mayor
Muriel Bowser announced several new initiatives to im- prove the city’s response in finding them.
“One missing young person, is one too many, and these new initiatives will help us do more to find and protect young peo- ple, particularly young girls of color, across our city,” said Mayor Bowser.
“Through social media, we have been able to highlight this problem and bring awareness to open cases, and now we are doing more to ensure that fam- ilies and children are receiving the wraparound services they need to keep families together and children safe.”
