Plans For Historic 2020 Reunion Of The Original Young Jr. High Alumni Underway
The last football team at N. B. Young Jr. High in May 1971.
From its opening in Jan- uary 1964, until June of 1971, Nathan B. Young Jun- ior High was the beloved ed- ucation and social hub for hundreds of Belmont Heights and Jackson Heights youngsters. Affec- tionately known as the home of the Mighty Buffaloes, Young’s galvanizing early years were brought to an end when, in June 1971, the school district was restruc- tured, thus marking the end of a bygone era.
Done were the glory days of Young’s winning athletic teams. Done were the per- formances of their ac- claimed marching band with its drum major and team of majorettes. And done was the mutual sense that the community be- longed to the school and the school belonged to the com- munity.
Since that initial conver- sion, Young Jr. High School has endured numerous changes. But the legacy of its first student bodies and fac- ulties stands strong. And now, forty-eight years later, we find that among Young’s “original herd” are commu- nity leaders, ministers, jour- nalists, artists, business owners, politicians, educa- tors of all levels, musicians, athletes, medical profession- als, activists, attorneys, vet- erans, and countless others who have made and con- tinue to make positive con-
tributions to society.
While many of the
alumni from those early years have maintained the friendships forged back in the day, others haven’t seen their old classmates since leaving their dear school. Which is why a 2020 reu- nion is being planned.
So, if you were a member of the faculty or staff or were a 7th, 8th or 9th grade student at Young Jr. High from 1964 through June of 1971, please mark your calendars and save these dates: October 9 - 10, 2020.
More information will be forthcoming, however, it is necessary to begin ongoing communication in order to generate an accurate count of expected attendees and to calculate the per person costs for reunion events.
There are three ways to get connected:
Facebook users should join the "N.B. Young Jr. High THE ORIGINAL HERD" Facebook group.
Those who are more comfortable with email should send their email address to bonnyehall- crews@juno.com.
In addition to your email address, please provide your name (maiden-current, for women) and your grades/years of atten- dance at Young Jr. High.
Lastly, people who
prefer messaging should text the same in- formation to (813) 494- 3981.
The deadline for con-
necting by ONE of the above methods is Satur- day, September 14, 2019.
Also, mark your calen-
dars and save the date for our upcoming “Original Herd” Alumni Reunion -- October 9 -10, 2020.
Let’s do this, Buffaloes!
