A MEMORIALIZING CELEBRATION
“Together, Always and Forever”
MRS. LEILA SMITH WILLIAMS Quietus – August 22, 2002
In retrospect, Luther Vandross’ Grammy Award winning album, Power of Love included the song, “Always and Forever.” As re- ported, there are not many cases of someone who makes a better ver- sion of a Classic recording. This is one of them.
Luther reaches deep and effortlessly, makes you forget who the original recording artists were. It’s a beautiful piece of music. Close your eyes and let your mind go with the song and you’ll remember it all. “Take time to tell me you really care, and we’ll share tomorrow together.” Together, always, and forever, Mama remains in our hearts.
Her love was the most unconditional, self-sacrificing, stern and teaching spirit, and constantly overflowing beyond measure for each of her children, grandchildren, and others.
As she was at the end of her life, “Terry Boy,” one of the young adult grandsons, remembers a lesson about calling collect to his grandmama’s house. Mama was in St. Joseph Hospital and Terrence had made a three-way hook-up. When told her it was Terry Boy on the phone, she brightened up her face and listened to his voice and kindly told him as many times before, “Terry Boy, didn’t I tell you to stop that calling here collect and running up the telephone bill, hang up this phone up!”
Not realizing Mama was not aware that she was not home, Terry tried to get her to understand it was not a collect call. She took the phone when he called back, fading in and out from the effects of the medication, and said, “Terry Boy are you hard of hearing, didn’t I tell you to hang up this phone up!” Well, Terry knew his grand- mamma was still in control even with the three-way hook up!
As written, “Some things don’t last forever, but some things do. Like a good song, or a good book, or a good memory you can take out and unfold in your darkest times, pressing down on the corners and peering in close, hoping you still recognize the person you see there.”
Precious memories how they linger, how they ever flood my soul; in the midnight; Precious sacred scenes unfold.”
Vandross was a musical master whose style has influenced an en- tire generation of today’s vocalists. However, the greatest recording of, ‘always and forever’ is found in Matthew 28:20, Jesus the Christ said, “...teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have com- manded you. And I will be with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Amen. “I AM the one who loves YOU always and for- ever.”
Thank you, Mama and “WE REALLY CARE, AND WE’LL SHARE TOMORROW TOGETHER.”
Goodnight Mama, we will see you (and Daddy) in the morning!
Loving legacies: Juanita, Leatricia, Valretha (Val), Earliest “Bro,” Maggie, Norma, Michele, “The Little Rascals,” and other grands.
