102 More Prisoners Get Sentences Commuted By President
Race To The White House
Sunday’s Presidential Debate Called One Of The ‘Ugliest’
The second debate has been labeled one of the ugliest in pres- idential race history.
President Barack Obama commuted the sen- tences of 102 more people on Thursday as part of his initia- tive to promote prison reform and shorten incarceration terms for nonviolent offend- ers.
The mass commutations were the second wave of re- prieves in a month's time. On August 3, President Obama commuted the sen- tences of 214 people, the largest reprieve in more than a century.
The President has voiced support of prison reform as it relates to long sentences as- sessed that are not commen- surate to certain nonviolent offenses, a bias that dispro- portionately impact minorities or those in those in the low-in- come strata.
With Thursday’s grants, the President has commuted 774 sentences, more than the
previous 11 presidents com- bined. With a total of 590 commutations this year, President Obama has now
commuted the sentences of more individuals in one year than in any other single year in our nation’s history.
ST. LOUIS — Donald Trump’s campaign was going up in flames so he decided to set Hillary Clinton, and the comforting careworn dignity of presidential debates, on fire.
Most politicians want to win, but what made a wounded, cornered Trump ex- ceptionally dangerous is that he not only wanted to win, but seemed to take deep satisfac- tion in winning in the ugliest way possible.
For all the rumors of Trump dropping out of the race in disgrace, and lingering questions about his desire to actually win the White House, the battered billionaire fought back with the same venom and force he exhibited during the Republican primaries in one of the most divisive and dispirit- ing political spectacles of this or any other election year.
The only kind words he of- fered to Clinton – that she “just never gives up” – was the quintessential Trump com- pliment, just as applicable to him as her.
From a tactical perspective,
Trump’s performance at the second debate at Washington University by critics accounts was a mirror image of his first debate.
At Long Island’s Hofstra University last month, he began tentatively and on de- fense, quickly losing grip on his most effective attacks on Clinton’s character and record – on Sunday he began by subjecting Clinton (and the country) to a mud-cannon assault starting with a refer- ence to Bill Clinton’s female accusers, calling his opponent “the devil” and threatening to prosecute her if elected.
But, gradually, and with ris- ing force, he eventually began connecting with a drumbeat of effective, blunt and focused at- tacks on her character and record.
Clinton wasn’t bad and he wasn’t good – but the spin room crowd declared him the winner, and that might be enough to keep rumored de- fections from Speaker Paul Ryan and other top Republi- cans from happening.
Visit To USF Postponed Due To Hurricane Matthew
President Barack Obama has postponed his appearance at the University of South Florida in Tampa last Wednesday because of Hurri- cane Matthew.
The President had planned to speak about health care at USF before heading to Miami for a political rally for Hillary Clinton.
White House Press Secre- tary Josh Earnest said the President will not travel to either event on Wednesday.
PRESIDENT OBAMA
President Obama Denounces Donald Trump As Latest Tape Reveals How He Thinks
President Barack Obama offered a harsh con- demnation of Donald Trump on Sunday, describ- ing the Republican seeking his office as “insecure” and his rhetoric as “unbelievable” after a recording emerged of Trump bragging about grop- ing women against their will.
“One of the most disturbing things about this election is just the unbelievable rhetoric coming at the top of the Re- publican ticket. I don’t need to repeat it. There are children in

the room,” the President said at a campaign event in
Chicago, a reference to the tape that The Washington Post published on Friday that showed Trump saying he could kiss women and grab at their genitals because he is a “star.”
President Obama went further than denouncing the 2005 comments about women caught on that tape, though, and invoked the Republican presidential nominee’s long history of making insulting statements on and off the campaign trail.
