Smokey Robinson Calls Backlash Over J.Lo's Motown Tribute 'Stupid'
SMOKEY ROBINSON AND JENNIFER LOPEZ
Ahead of the 2019 Gram- mys, it was revealed Jen- nifer Lopez was taped as a performer for a Motown trib- ute, which ruffled a lot of feathers.
Minutes before Sunday's award ceremony (Feb. 10) Variety caught up with Mo- town and music icon Smokey Robinson and asked him about the backlash over J.Lo's upcoming per- formance.
"I don't think anyone who's intelligent is upset," the 78-year-old entertainer said, "I think anyone who's upset is stupid."
When queried about why Lopez was the right fit for the performance, Robinson said simply Motown's music is universal.
"Hey man, Motown was music for everybody. Every- body! You know what I mean? So that just says Jen- nifer Lopez, growing up in her Hispanic neighborhood, wherever she was, loved Mo- town. How can we beat that? Who's stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing something for Mo- town?"

Zamunda."
Murphy has a lot to cel-
ebrate these days, with the recent birth of his 10th child. The 57-year-old actor and his fiancée, Paige Butcher, 39, welcomed a son named Max Charles Murphy, last year.
The as-yet untitled "Com- ing to America" sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7, 2020.

 On $3M Bond
Of BET Concert After
Mystikal is reportedly a free man after serving roughly 18 months behind bars. The longtime rapper — real name Michael Tyler — was able to come up with the $3 million bond to secure his release.
“It’s been a long time coming for Mike,” attorney Tim Yazbeck said. “But now he can get back to being the artist he is, doing what he loves, and seeing his kids again.”
The NOLA native report- edly earned the money from a fund set up by his friends and family and a new record con- tract. Last month, he report- edly secured a deal for three albums. At the time, Yazbeck revealed he was hopeful Mystikal would re- ceive an advance to be able to

The former No Limit Records artist was taken into custody in August 2017 on charges of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnap- ping.
One of Mystikal’s other attorneys, Joel Pearce, be- lieves they have a strong case.
He’s expected at trial this May.
Nicki Minaj says she’s canceling her appearance at the BET Experience Concert after the network tweeted about her and fellow rapper Cardi B.
Minaj said Monday on social media that she won’t perform at the concert or BET Awards. It comes after BET tweeted Sunday that Minaj was “being dragged by her lacefront” following Cardi B’s Grammy win for best rap album.
In a statement, BET apol- ogized to Minaj for the “hurt, disappointment and confusion that this post has caused.” The network says it will conduct an internal in- vestigation. The tweet has been deleted.
