Last week, a federal judge sentenced a 26-year-old w0man to serve several years in prison. She was convicted by a federal jury on September 3, 2019.
District Judge Susan C. Bucklew sentenced Lelia Vanessa Perdomo Zapata, of Colombia, South America, to 15 years in federal prison. She was convicted of conspir- acy to distribute and to pos- sess, with the intent to distribute, five kilograms or more of cocaine while onboard a ship subject to the jurisdic- tion of the United States.
She was also convicted of possession with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine on that vessel, and for perjury.
According to trial evidence, Zapata was the Colombian load guard for a Cartagena, Colombia-based cocaine smuggling crew and part of an
international maritime drug smuggling operation involving at least 440 kilograms of co- caine, worth approximately $13 million.
Officials said that Zapata and one of her co-conspirators were transporting 18 bales of cocaine onboard a 60-foot sail- ing vessel from Cartagena to Cancun, Mexico.
The USCG law enforce- ment officers from Tactical Law Enforcement Team Pa- cific, boarded the sailing vessel and discovered 18 bales of co- caine and multiple electronic devices consistent with co- caine trafficking. Subsequent analyses of these devices yielded crucial digital evidence of the cocaine smuggling oper- ation.
During trial, Zapata testi- fied under oath for nearly seven hours and made numer- ous statements that were proven to be not true.
