Edward “Ed” Jen- nings, Sr., a Tampa native and former Mayor of Gainesville, FL, died last Fri- day. He was 82 years old.
In Gainesville, he was re- membered last week as “an important community leader,” according to news accounts.
Jennings graduated from Middleton High School in 1957, earned a B. S. degree from Bethune-Cookman Uni- versity in Science and Chem- istry.
A Middle School teacher and local grocer in Gainesville, Jennings went on to become a City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem. Jennings was appointed mayor in 1996
Jennings was married to his college sweetheart, Mrs. Bettye Gibbs Jennings, a retired educator, for 53 years. He is also survived by 2 sons, Byron Jennings, Sr. and Edward Lee Jennings, Jr. (Heidi); and 5 grands.
Jennings’ niece, Mrs. Sherryl Jennings Cusseaux, remembers her uncle fondly as the youngest uncle who became the family’s matriarch. My father James A. Jennings, Sr., passed just before my 12 birthday, and he was like a father to my seven siblings. He was the last of the

nine Jennings brothers to pass. To our family, he was our encourager and cake baker. For years, I would get this box in the mail for my birthday, it was a seven up or sour cream pound cake. I named him Uncle Cake.
Although he was well known in Gainesville as a trail- blazer for equal rights, his life’s mission was helping peo- ple, especially young people seeking employment, and re- sources for college or trade schools. I learned a couple of years ago that he gave Mr. Ricky Williams of “Call Ricky Ask Ricky” his first job in Gainesville. Mr. Williams went on to become the Assis- tant State Attorney in both Vo- lusia and Hillsborough Counties.
Robert “Jay” Blount, Jr., President of Abe Brown Ministries, is the eldest son of Jennings’ youngest sister, Mrs. Gloria Ann Blount of Atlanta, GA. He remembers, “My Uncle Ed was a trail- blazer! Through his example, I learned that leadership re- quires boldness to speak up, the courage to say what needs to be said, and confidence in your self-worth.”
The Wake Service for Jen- nings, Sr., will be held on Friday, January 24th from 5-7 p. m. at Campus View Church and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 25th at 10:30 a. m. at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
