The Better Business Bu- reau is warning consumers in the market to buy a used car to be on the lookout for flood-damaged cars.
With the recent flooding throughout the Southeast, many cars that experience water damage are expected to be cleaned up and re-sold to unsuspecting consumers. Some experts estimate that up to half of all vehicles damaged by flooding eventu- ally return to market.
Florida ranks #3 as having waterlogged ve- hicles resold, according to a recent Carfax re- port.
After a vehicle has in- curred flood damage, the in- surance company may declare it a total loss. When a car is declared a total loss, it should be sent to the junk yard. However, many of
these cars are often sold at auction as ‘salvage’ or ‘flood’ vehicles. Then, they may end up for sale in used car lots, classified ads, or online.
After a thorough cleaning and replacement of the car- pet and floor mats, these cars on the surface may look as good as new. Buying a car that has been exposed to flood waters can have hidden problems, including mold and mildew, rusty wiring, computer malfunctions, airbags that don’t inflate, and more.
The Better Business Bu- reau provides tips to help you spot a flood-damaged vehicle here: BBB Tips: How to Avoid Buying a Flood-Damaged Car.
