Michelle Obama Shows Melania Trump Around The White House
Michelle Obama’s Glamour Takes Center Stage On Vogue Cover
The December issue of Vogue arrives with first lady Michelle Obama on its cover wearing a slinky white Car- olina Herrera gown. It is sleeveless. Her hair is swept back and flowing. Her makeup is perfectly natural. She is wearing a magnificent sparkly ring and a pair of Monique Péan earrings. The backdrop offers no hint of the White House, the nation's capital or the ornate stateliness that has long attached to the occupant of the East Wing. The portrait exudes the sort of casual glam- our in which Vogue specializes, but that is not typically associ- ated with first ladies.
If there is any takeaway from
the images by photographer Annie Leibovitz, it is that Mrs. Obama is offering up a version of herself to the public that is separate and distinct from the role she has filled for nearly eight years.
The accompanying article, which was reported by Jonathan Van Meter over the course of several months, is a review of her time in the White House. A victory lap. It highlights Mrs.Obama's work with students, her garden and her focus on the nation's veterans. Van Meter was there when she surprised stu- dents at Howard University and co-hosted "Ellen."
Melania Trump and First Lady Michelle Obama.
On January 20, America will get not only a new president, but a new first lady -- 46-year- old Melania Trump.
First Lady Michelle Obama showed her around the White House residence Thursday.
Mrs. Trump was born in Slovenia and became a U.S. cit- izen ten years ago.
Melania Trump will make history when she becomes first lady, the only one to grow up in a communist nation, and only the second one to be born abroad in nearly 200 years.
She’ll follow the high profile first lady, who championed healthy eating and did star turns on late-night television.
The former fashion model, who speaks five languages, will soon have to decide how to use her new platform, according to Anita McBride, who served Laura Bush.
Mrs. Trump gave only two major speeches during the campaign. And one, her con- vention address, plagiarized from Mrs. Obama’s 2008 speech.
President Obama’s Trip To Greece Met With Huge Protests
ATHENS, Greece -- Greek riot police used tear gas and stun grenades Tuesday in Athens to disperse about 3,000 left-wing marchers protesting a visit by Presi- dent Obama after they tried to enter an area off-limits to demonstrators.
Police made at least four ar- rests and said one woman was slightly injured in the clashes, which took place far from Mr. Obama’s meetings.
The violence broke out as youths in motorcycle helmets and gas masks, armed with wooden clubs and petrol bombs, tried to break a police cordon in front of a barrier formed by police buses. Riot-
Protest
ers pulled back to the Athens Polytechnic university com- plex, site of a 1973 student up- rising, and engaged in running street fights with police, throwing dozens of petrol
bombs.
An American president has
not visited Greece since 1999, when President Bill Clin- ton was in office. His visit was also met with large protests.
Hillary Clinton Makes First Public Appearance Since Conceding Election
Hillary Clinton spoke Wednesday night at the Chil- dren's Defense Fund's "Beat the Odds" gala, where the for- mer presidential candidate was honored for her dedica- tion to child advocacy.
It was her first public ap- pearance since her concession speech on Nov. 9.
"Never has there been a more urgent time for all of us to help bind our wounds and heal our divisions and work for a nation and world where all children are respected and protected and no child is left behind," said Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children's Defense Fund. "We thank Hillary who
