Groups Join To Host ‘Souls To The Polls’
JASMINE MATTEAR
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Thanks to the diligent work of several groups from West Tampa, as well as some clergy and some local elected officials, on November 6th immediately after church services (12 noon organizers will start), a “Soul To The Polls” event will be held at the West Tampa Outdoor Event Center on Main Street, just west of Albany Avenue.
One of organizers, Dwight Bolden, said in East Tampa, this project has been done on several occasions.
“In the African American community, some feel there is a need for this effort to spread to all the African American communities in Hillsborough County.
“This election season, a group of African American groups and organizations felt the need to have an event west of the Hillsborough River, not intended to interfere with what’s happening in East Tampa.”
Groups and organizations have united with the overall goal to spread this event all over the county, and make it a major event.
Bolden said he appreci- ates the response he’s gotten from Pastor Varner Webb of New Harvest Church of Christ, and he hopes the re- maining 11 churches he con- tacted will participate.

“There is a need to motivate voters, with emphasis on edu- cating our people on voting and to motivate them to vote,” said Bolden.
“Also, thanks to the NAACP for their support and commit- ment to be a part of this event.”
Pastor Webb said he and his congregation are looking forward to being a part of the event.
“We’re bringing our church with us, and to encourage peo- ple to vote for the President and the other elected officials as well. I look forward to speaking and rallying the peo- ple. We have to let our voices be heard to make sure Donald Trump is not elected.”
Jasmine Mattear, repre- senting Black Joy, said they had already been partnering with Bolden on other proj- ects, and when they heard about efforts to get people to vote, they decided to come to- gether.
“We want to be a part of reaching out to the pastors, residents, and others to walk to the polls with them. We want to create an atmosphere of comfort for everyone.”
Other groups involved in the effort are the West Tampa Alliance, and the Hillsborough County Democratic Black Cau- cus.
There will be entertain- ment and guest speakers, and some of the candidates.
