Tampa Police Announce New Community Investment Grant
The Tampa Police Depart- ment has a new resource for investing in the city’s safety. Police Chief Brian Dugan announced the Community Investment Grant on June 29.
The grant marks the first time in the department’s his- tory where organizations could apply for financial help for grassroots safety initia- tives.
The goal of the Commu-
BRIAN DUGAN Tampa Police Chief
nity Investment Grant is to provide assistance to non- profit organizations that are engaged in projects or pro- grams that benefit Tampa citizens.
In September, Chief Dugan and his staff will award four grants, totaling $10,000 to local charitable organizations.
“This community grant opportunity has the potential to inspire organizations to
think of new ways that they can help prevent crime in our neighborhoods.
“We also recognize that some organizations are just simply in need of dollars to continue programs that make sense from a public safety standpoint,” Chief Dugan said.
Organizations must have a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) designation in order to apply for the Com-
munity Investment Grant. They also have to meet ad- ditional criteria, which in- cludes using the awarded funds in a manner that sup- ports the police depart- ment’s mission to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life through a co- operative partnership with all citizens.
The deadline to apply for the grant is Tues- day, July 31st.

BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Saturday, July 28th, members of the community will gather to pay tribute to a Tampa businesswoman. The event will take place at The Inkwell Centre, 2905 N. 50th Street, beginning at 6 p.m.
The Appreciation Dinner is being held in honor of Ms. Candy Lowe, local entre- preneur and community ac- tivist. It is being hosted by Jarvis El-Amin, of En- hancement Enterprises, LLC.
A Tampa native, Ms. Lowe attended the public schools of Hillsborough
MS. CANDY LOWE
County. She continued her education and earned her degree as a Registered
JARVIS EL-AMIN
Nurse.
After several years in the
field, Ms. Lowe decided to
take her life in a different di- rection. She opened a Tea Shop. And from that en- deavor grew a monthly dia- logue with members of the community entitled, “Candy Lowe Tea and Conversa- tions.”
From that venture, Ms. Lowe founded the Black Business Bus Tour in 2006. With the program, residents have the opportunity to join others touring various Black-owned and operated businesses. Her most recent venture was the Spring Black Business Bus Tour. That event took place on April 12, 2018.
During that event, more than 250 shoppers had an
opportunity to visit and sup- port several businesses in the Tampa Bay Area.
Ms. Lowe has also had the distinction of being fea- tured on USA Today and CNN for her efforts to en- courage others to support minority businesses by “Buying Black” every day.
Ms. Lowe is being hon- ored for her leadership in the community, as an eco- nomic empowerment leader, an organizer, and for being a driving force to inspire oth- ers.
