 Accidents
Children Hit By Car Crossing Busy Street
Crime
Two children were taken to a hospital Tuesday after being struck by a car. The ac- cident took place on E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., near N. Mayfield Av- enue.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the two children, a 12-year-old and
his 7-year-old sister, were at- tempting to cross during rush hour traffic. The chil- dren were not crossing at a crosswalk.
They had successfully crossed the eastbound lanes. Some vehicles in the west- bound lanes had stopped, but in the last lane, the driver
did not see the children and struck them as they entered the lane.
The unidentified driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The driver has not been charged.
The children are expected to recover from their in- juries, police said.
Target Gets
Elderly Women Injured When Car Drives Into Bank
A federal judge has sen- tenced an Ocala man to 40 years in prison. He was found guilty of attempted arson, possession of an unregistered destructive device, and mak- ing destructive devices.
Mark Charles Barnett
was indicted on the charges on June 20th. Barnett, who is a registered sex offender, had been conditionally re- leased from state prison in 2013, following multiple felony convictions for sexual assault, kidnapping, and grand theft. He was also pre- viously convicted of kidnap- ping in Mississippi.
According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, Barnett offered a Con- fidential Informant (CI) $10,000 to place explosive bombs inside Target stores along the east coast of the United States.
Barnett bought the bomb components and as- sembled at least 10 of the de- structive devices, which he disguised inside the packag- ing of common grocery items. He then delivered the devices to the CI with in- structions to put them on the shelves of Target stores from New York to Florida.
However, the CI con- tacted law enforcement and surrendered the destructive devices to authorities. Bar- nett was arrested on Febru-

Barnett reportedly de-
vised the plan so that the company’s stock value would fall after the explosions. He felt that this would allow him to buy shares of Target stock while it was cheap and before the prices rebounded.
Barnett allegedly told the CI, “If someone has to die so that I can make some money, so be it.”
Federal explosives experts determined that the devices were capable of causing property damage, serious in- jury, and death. Searches of Barnett’s house, cellphone, and computer revealed pic- tures of the grocery items that he had turned into bombs, as well as leftover bomb components and arti- cles describing stock op- tions.
Police are conducting an investigation after their vehicle drove into a local bank. Both oc- cupants were seriously injured.
According to the St. Petersburg Police De- partment, the accident took place just before 5 p.m. at 182 37th Avenue, North.
Police have not determined why the 2006 Hyundai Azera accelerated and drove into the
bank.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as
91-year-old Margaret Singer. Her passenger was 74-year-old Kamla Ramsaroop. Both women suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. No one inside the bank was injured, police said.
The investigation is continuing.
