through this. I’ve bought three refrigerators and three stoves since I’ve been here, and I have no air conditioning. We’re all using window units.
“We don’t want to hear any more excuses. We want this to be straightened out. This is not the dream any of us had of becoming first-time homeowners.
THA Communications Direc- tor, Lillian Stringer, issued this statement:
“It should be noted that the Chinese drywall situa- tion is clearly a developer/contractor and Chinese drywall manufac- turer issue. The liability in this matter does not rest with THA. We did not bid the work or hire the con- tractor. We do sympathize with the residents and are hopeful that a solution is forthcoming.
While the Authority was made aware of the Chinese drywall problem 6 years ago we consistently remained in contact with the residents, contacted the management company to urge them to get the developer to accept re- sponsibility, as well as worked with the City to see what assistance could be provided.
Despite a two-hour con- versation with the journal- ist on this subject critical and important information was omitted that included
the fact that THA had an- other development (Riverview Terrace) that was also affected by Chinese drywall. Its developer, Lennar Homes, handled the situation properly. In that case more than 60 families were affected. Lennar relo- cated all affected families, paid their mortgages made the necessary repairs, and moved the families back when the homes were com- pleted. This is the same sce- nario that should have taken place at Belmont Heights Estates.”
Because federal dollars were used to finance the project, U. S. Representative Kathy Cas- tor was contacted, and she is urging federal action be taken to help the homeowners impacted by Chinese drywall.
Rep. Castor wants U. S. HUD Secretary, Julian Castro, to help determine how that agency can bring about “com- mon sense solutions to the toxic Chinese drywall issue that con- tinues to plague my neighbors throughout Tampa Bay.
"Certainly the Tampa Housing Authority, with assistance from the Hillsborough County Com- mission and others, can work with families and the U.S. De- partment of Housing and Urban Development to ensure our neighbors have a safe and healthy place to live,” U.S. Rep. Castor said.
FYI
‘Parks To The Polls’
On Saturday, November 5th at Cyrus Greene Park, Represen- tative Kathy Castor, the Hillsborough County Black Democratic Caucus, and other partners, will be hosting “Parks To The Polls.”
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p. m., and everyone is asked to come out in a display of solidarity, and to be a part of the merging of the African American and Hispanic communities.
There will be plenty of food, activities, entertainment, and some of the candidates seeking office are expected to attend.
This is not an East Tampa-only event, and everyone from all over the city and county is invited to come out and participate.
