One would be hard-pressed to find a music journalist with as much first-hand experience reporting the early days of Hip Hop like Nelson George. The culture was once consid- ered a fad, but George had enough foresight to under- stand its staying power and he’s benefited significantly from it.
Over the years, he’s evolved into one of black music’s great storytellers.
Flexing his godlike knowl- edge of Hip Hop’s early years coming out of the Disco era, he’s serving as producer, writer and consultant for Net- flix’s series “The Get Down.” The first episode aired Friday, August 12.

JHENE AIKO
Bad news for Jhene Aiko’s marriage...
According to reports she’s filed for divorce from her hus- band of 11 months, rapper/pro- ducer Dot Da Genius.
In the divorce documents they’ve obtained, Aiko cited ir- reconcilable differences as the reason for marriage’s end. She also asked the judge to deny Dot spousal support.
This news comes amid ru- mors that Aiko and her collab partner Big Sean (in their hip- hop/R&B duo Twenty88) are working on more than just music.
Way before “Hit ‘Em Up” ever crossed his mind, Tupac reportedly mentored The No- torious B.I.G. as he was starting his rap career. In an interview with the “Murder Master Music Show,” author Ben Westhoff details the early relationship between the West Coast and East Coast leg- ends and says that Biggie asked Tupac to be his man- ager, but Tupac told Biggie to stay with Puff Daddy aka Sean Diddy Combs.
The information was part of his findings in his new book, Original Gangstas: The Un- told Story of Dr. Dre, Eazy-E,
Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, and the Birth of West Coast Rap.'” And the rest is history, as two albums later, the man born Christopher Wallace became one of Bad Boy Enter-
tainment’s brightest stars.
As the rivalry between Tupac and Biggie developed, Westhoff explains how their closeness in the early days in- tensified the pain of the possi- bility of betrayal in the Quad Studios shooting where
Tupac was hit five times. Westhoff’s Original Gangstas is set for a Septem-
ber 13 release.
