Comprehensive Family Literacy [continued]
o Develop adult mentoring programs with outcome of increased economic self-sufficiency for family unit
o Increase access to technology for homes
o Increase awareness and access to basic needs resources to reduce learner’s barriers to
participation
o Promote utilization of community centers as venues for safe, local and affordable family
activities
o Promote the increased utilization of libraries and culturally diverse community events for
families
o Develop and support family centered technology activities
o Design, implement and support family centered health literacy activities o Develop and support family centered financial literacy activities
Youth Literacy
Coaching, Tutoring & Mentoring
o Identify current tutoring and mentoring programs for school age youth and assess additional needs for each school
o Develop partnerships and programs to increase the number of volunteers, sites, youth involved beginning with schools in greatest need
o Develop mentoring programs that include high profile role spokespersons
o Form partnerships with area colleges and universities to recruit volunteers to tutor and
mentor in the local school districts
o Increase community based homework partnerships – faith based, service organizations,
community centers, etc.
o Provide high quality training and professional development for coaches, tutors, and
mentors
o Coordinate with family literacy providers to ensure access to mentors, tutors and coaches
Continuous Communications
Keeping all stakeholders fully informed of the efforts and progress of the Network’s work is crucial for long term success. Network services at the time of launch include:
 Coordinated monthly meetings
 Website with reference and community planning materials
 Monthly e-newsletter
 Integration of existing literacy resources
 Innovation in the content and delivery of literacy programming
During implementation Network services will begin to include:
 Best practice tracking and dissemination
 Help and information to all literacy constituents
 A unique service brand for maximum consumer engagement
