When standing on a dock and handling a bow or stern line with no eye,
use this method of tying the clove hitch to secure the vessel. Upon
catching the line, take an underhand turn around the bollard or piling (1).
If the boat is still moving, hold the line hard with this turn to snub the craft
to a stop. Then make a second underhand loop and drop it over the
object (2). For extra insurance, finish off the clove with a half hitch around
the line’s standing part (3).
