Page 90 - Knots You Need to Know Easy-to-Follow Guide to the 30 Most Useful Knots
P. 90
When a boat’s crew wants to make a quick fastening to a bollard or
piling, the best knot is a clove hitch tied in hand, that is, completed
loosely before being dropped over the object. To tie the clove hitch in the
hand, take two loops in the left hand (1); pass the second loop around
behind the first (2 and 3), thus forming both an overhand and an
underhand loop. Slip both loops over the bollard (4) and tighten the knot
with even pressure on both ends (5). This method is particularly
convenient when a boat whose lines have no eyes is temporarily docked.
