fulfillment of creation’s very purpose – establishing a permanent all else. This type of trust in God’s Divine Providence has been
dwelling place for God in the lower worlds and, more importantly, in negatively derided as just “simple faith,” yet when confronted by
the hearts and minds of the Jewish people. life’s complexities, inherent paradoxes, and perplexing dilemmas,

With these themes in mind, the gifts were intended to rectify world this approach allows us to penetrate the surface of reality by relying
history as well as to draw down upon the Jewish people the spiritual on this deep understanding of God’s Omniscience.
energy created by the righteous deeds of the saintly individuals and
patriarchs who preceded them. What better time to rectify the sins
of Adam and Eve, the generation of the Flood, the builders of the
tower of Babel, and the sons of Jacob who sold Joseph. What better
time to draw down upon themselves the spirit of self-sacrifice evinced
by Abraham and Isaac, the wisdom of Jacob, the peace between God
and Israel that Moses and Aaron achieved, and the commitment
to the 613 mitzvot of the Torah. Although we will not delve here
into Nadav and Avihu’s spiritual passion, which led to their tragic
deaths on this very day, we should note that their spiritual boldness
led them to intuit many of the spiritual possibilities, rectifications,
and unifications, inherent in this day. While they may have failed
to completely understand their proper roles, they heroically died
attempting to perfect the world. (For a fuller discussion, see “The
Enigmatic Deaths of Nadav and Avihu” above.)
According to those who maintain that the innovator of these
intentions was Nachshon, the first prince to bring the gifts, we
should recall that he had a personal history of seizing the moment.
When God told Moses to tell the people to march forward to escape
their pursuers, Nachshon did not hesitate. He had faith in God and
jumped into the sea. He had the courage to continue advancing until
the waters reached his nostrils and the sea finally split. Although
we must temper this spiritual boldness with the lesson learned
from Nadav and Avihu’s actions and not act with undue passion,
there are nevertheless times in our lives when truly great spiritual
opportunities present themselves. Events and circumstances align
themselves in such a way that those who take the initiative may
               accomplish tremendous rectifications.
For example, two people who have been quarreling for a long time
may find themselves thrown into a situation where they need to
work together or where a particular atmosphere is conducive to their
