The members of Shevet Levi had a special status as “the legion of the
King.” This is why they were counted separately. To emphasize their
importance, they were counted from the age of one month. From birth,
they join the ranks of Hashem’s soldiers.
The term head count is omitted in the command to count the tribe of Levi,
because it is not fitting to state this about the chosen tribe. Furthermore,
the word (their head count) hints to the word
(reincarnation). Since Shevet Levi served Hashem in the Mikdash, they
would surely be spared the pain of reincarnation.
“The Children of Israel shall encamp each man
by his banner according to the insignias of their
fathers’ household”
