Developing Mental Strength

With the uncertainties we face these days, many of us are hopeful that the times will take a turn for the better. But how do we make sure that
with whatever challenges arise, we will be able to take control of our emotions, thoughts and actions? Psychotherapist, clinical social worker,
and regular columnist for Forbes, Amy Morin, tells us that developing mental strength can see us through difficult times. In her book, 13
Habits Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, she shares how we can develop mental resilience for a more fulfilling life.

13 Habits Mentally Strong People Don’t Do

Mentally strong people don’t wallow in self-pity.
No one is immune to hard times. Whether it comes in the form of illness or some other personal tragedy, sooner or later, life’s going to throw you some curveballs.
But rather than dwelling on what was lost, be grateful for what it gives you. Improved gratitude helps you sleep better and allows you to enjoy a better general
       standard of health.
Mentally strong people never give their power to others.
Mentally strong people don’t let the opinions of others determine how they think and act in life. Forgiving others for their transgressions against you
is an important part of reclaiming your power. Be prepared to forgive unconditionally, it helps you live a less stressful and, therefore, longer life.

Mentally strong people don’t resist change.
It is important to adopt the right attitude toward change, otherwise, it will be very difficult for you to overcome every obstacle that comes your way.
So have a plan on the change you want to make. Set your goal and decide on the changes in behavior that will help you reach your goal, and anticipate
       the
hurdles along the way. Have someone hold you accountable, and track your progress by writing your milestones in a journal.

Mentally strong people do not fret about things they can’t control.
Don’t waste effort on what you can’t control; concentrate on doing what you can. The greatest levels of happiness are achieved by people who take
a lot of steps to steer their life in the direction they want, while at the same time accepting that there are many things that are out of their control.

Mentally strong people do not fear hurting the feelings of others.
If you want to develop your own mental strength, you should learn how not to fear hurting other people’s feelings. This does not mean you should
be insensitive, listen to yourself more than the concerns of others. It will make your confidence and happiness soar.
Mentally strong people are not afraid of taking calculated risks.
Mitigating risk starts by carefully analyzing the nature of the risk itself. Once the elements of risk are clear, you can take the right steps to minimize them.
So, if you want to develop your mental strength, start looking at the risks that hold you back. Maybe they aren’t as dangerous and scary as you've always imagined.
