opines that the title Son of God was a common title for the
emperor Augustus, Tiberius, Domitian, and other subsequent
emperors. The soldiers through their proclamation are patently
denying the lordship of the emperors/empires and are affirming
the Lordship of Jesus, not the emperor, but the manifested
instrument of God’s love. Therefore, in encountering the cross
the soldiers experience a significant conversion wherein they
are liberated from the guilt of being tools of the Roman Empire
and walk into the gospel of God's Kingdom. Further, the cross
empowers the soldiers to emphatically affirm Jesus as Lord, not
Caesar or any Roman Emperor.
Prayer
Dear God, God of life, love, and liberation, we praise
and thank you Lord for the cross that reminds us about your
historical intervention in the world to promote life through the
power of love that leads us towards liberation. In Jesus’ name I
pray,Amen.
