Conclusion
• Albuminuria is a valid target for treatment
• Many new albuminuria lowering therapies in development
• Only few are tested in hard outcome trials: Canagliflozin and Atrasentan (the only trial which aims to obtain regulatory approval for renoprotection!)
• Recent hard outcome trials in CKD have shown disappointing results
• We need better and innovative trial designs to test the new agents (or combinations) on albuminuria and clinical endpoints
• This requires a concerted action of all parties (e.g. clinicians / researchers / patient organizations / regulatators / industry)
