DISRUPTION OF TRANSPORTATION SEJAPNTEUMARBYER20210818
So the disruption isn’t necessarily about an auto industry going away or even shrinking (quite the opposite), but rather a drastic change of the delivery of mobility from a product to more of a network — and all the resulting changes in supply-chain economics, winners and losers within the auto industry itself, and the impact to existing industry stakeholders. According to BI Intelligence’s 2018 forecast for U.S. connected and autonomous cars, by the year 2023:
• Nearly all new cars in the US will be connected by 2023, and 1 in 7 will have autonomous features.
• There will be over 2.5 million semi- or fully autonomous cars on US roads.
• Autonomous cars used for on-demand mobility services will account for 16% of total miles driven in the US, compared with 13% for manually driven vehicles.
• On-demand mobility services will account for 29% of miles driven in the US — autonomous cars will drive 640 billion miles, while manually driven cars will account for 520 billion miles.
• Total data generated in the US will approach 8 zettabytes (ZBs), up from 0.72 ZBs in 2018. [According to the PC Encyclopedia, a gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes; a terabyte is equal to 1,024 gigabytes; a petabyte is equal to 1,024 terabytes; an exabyte is equal to 1,024 petabytes; and a zettabyte is equal to 1,024 exabytes.]
• Semi-autonomous cars will make up nearly 80% of total data generated, or 6.3 ZBs. (The Transportation and Logistics Forecast Book 2018, Jonathan Camhi and Ayoub Aouad, 08/23/18)
