But four minutes later things were even again, with Mt
Albert showing excellent resolve to work their way
down field, eventually outnumbering their opponents
on the left edge and scoring via a flying Dillon Rota.
With Wallace failing to convert from out wide Mt
Albert still trailed by two.
As the final five minutes approached it was some x-
factor from the Pirates which was the difference again,
bursting through via Otunuku on the left edge where
Saula Solomona eventually finished.
The conversion attempt from Carl was wide to the
right, leaving Pt Chevalier with a six-point advantage
and the game still wide open.
Entering the final minute Mt Albert were out on their
feet, and leaked a fourth time as Carl dummied and
ran to dot down under the posts from metres out.
With the result out of question hulking prop Herman
Retzlaff, hardly a noted goal kicker on the Auckland
club scene, stepped up to add the two and confirm the
22-10 victory.
Coach Grant Pocklington said the victory will ensure
his side goes down as one of the greatest in Auckland
club history.
"We talked about creating a legend, and when you win
three in a row you become part of folklore,"
Pocklington said.
"We wanted to make statement for years to come and
make Pt Chevalier pride.
"After we lost two games in a row earlier this year we
just decided that this is what we wanted to come for,
the other trophies would have been nice but they can
have them, this is what we were aiming for."
