ZAKAT IN MALAYSIA
ZAKAT DISTRIBUTION
Zakat distribution is managed by Baitulmal under the IRC. The Baitulmal Committee
decides on the types of programmes and projects to be implemented annually
using the zakat fund. The target groups consist of the eight (8) categories of asnaf
(beneficiaries) as stated in Surah at-Taubah, verse 60:
1. The fakir (destitute) Those who do not own any material
possession or means of livelihood. These are
the people who suffer and have no means to
sustain their daily needs.
2. The poor Those with insufficient sustenance to meet
their basic needs.
3. Amil or zakat administrator Individuals who are appointed to collect zakat.
4. Muallaf (Reverts) Those who embraced Islam or are inclined to
embrace Islam.
5. Riqab Those in bondage and wish to free themselves.
6. Gharimin People who are in debt and in need to meet
their basic needs.
7. Fisabillillah A person who pursues the path for the
cause of Allah and for the betterment of the
community
8. Ibnussabil Stranded travellers who are on a permitted
journey.
