LEOS’ MID-WINTER CONFERENCE
Let’s Enjoy OurSelves
District 20-K1
Leos’ Mid-Winter Conference
February 16th, 2020
Written by District 20-K1 Reporter, Aruna Budhram (RHSOP Leo President)
The Leos’ 2020 Mid-Winter Conference was conducted in an extremely professional way and was formatted so that every club
could feel involved. Many clubs across the district participated and shared their presentations. Each club showcased a specific talent or idea
through dancing, singing, or drama. The Leos enjoyed the fellowship and discussion of new inspirational ideas.
The day’s activities began with a splendid “Continental Breakfast” including fruits, bagels, eggs, and more. The program itself
included Leo showcases, the reading of poems and special guest speakers. Leos and Lions were surprised with the talent and ideas present-
ed. Everyone was surely able to walk away stunned at a performance or new piece of information they had acquired. The entertainment
part of the program was so enjoyable that the audience was out of their seats cheering the performers.
With society continually changing, the rapid increase of peer pressure never seems to give the younger generation a break. For
many reasons, Juuling and e-cigarettes have become a plague among our younger generation. This issue was addressed by a panel of Leos
from across the district. The panelists were prompted to answer questions posed by Leo District Chair, Stephanie Simeon. They were also
given the opportunity to add their own opinions as well as research - based information. The Leos uncovered a wealth of information.
These Juulis could be easily disguised as a USB at the local corner shops where these devices are easily available to teenagers. The fact that
they are disguised in flavors like piña colada as an option, was a shocking revelation to many at the conference. Everyone in the audience
surely was able to grasp a greater understanding about the concept of vaping, as well as how to help a friend to quit this dangerous habit.
After the Panel Discussion on Vaping, we were honored with words from our Guest Speaker Past International Director Joyce Mid-
dleton. With the 2020 induction of new Leos, Past International Director Joyce evoked a sense of accomplishment and pride in the future of
the District 20-K1 Leos. PID Joyce Middleton and District Governor Deborah Harrison shared many inspiring insights with those present at
the conference. They reiterated that no matter how small an action may seem to us, it can go a long way to positively impact someone
else’s life. Furthermore they inspired us to go out there and help people battling a Juuling addiction and to speak up, even if it’s someone
close to us. Additionally, these Lions reminded us of true Leoism and that we can make positive changes in our very own communities and
schools once we try our best and never lose sight of who we are.
Another highlight of the Conference which touched the hearts of many, was the reading of a few “Women’s Empowerment Po-
ems” which was followed by Leos handing out roses to all the women.
Finally Leo District Chairperson Lion Stephanie Simeon thanked everyone for participating in the Leo District 20-K1 Mid-Winter
Convention. The event ended with the benediction, then the assembly proceeded to a fabulous Lunch to end the day.
