DG’s Final General Membership Meeting
REVEREND ROBERT WATERMAN
~ GUEST SPEAKER
“Service: Titles are not the permission to serve”
Pastor Robert Waterman, (Antioch Baptist Church,
Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn ), a former NYC Public School
teacher and an in-service Higher Education Officer at
Medgar Evers College is a highly respected
motivational speaker.
“Some people wonder if they need permission to serve
and others do not serve until they get a title!” he
observed.
“As Lions, you are symbols of strength, courage and
pride who can communicate, collaborate and adapt
when situations are contrary,” he continued,
supporting his affirmation with the biblical narrative of
The Good Samaritan.
In this parable, a priest and a levite, both bearers of
official titles and status, ignore and side-step an
injured man without stopping to help him. But, a
Samaritan, who had no title, stopped to show love,
concern, and even volunteered to provide food, shelter
and medical care.
The Reverend Pastor reminded the audience of Rev.
Dr. Martin Luther King’s directive, “Everybody can be
great, because everybody can serve”.
He proposed a reflective question:
Who should I serve?
Pastor Waterman’s address suggested that as
members of Lions International, we are “Good
Samaritans”, He encouraged the Lions to continue
serving and supporting our neighbors at home and
abroad, who are experiencing adverse circumstances,
regardless of religion or race. Rev. Waterman at the podium
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind and love
your neighbor as you love yourself” he quoted. And in
spontaneous unison, the Lions responded, “ Amen”
With or without titles, we will proudly wear our Lions’
yellow vest and serve those in need to help make the
world a better place for all humanity.
