KEYNOTE SPEAKER’S ADDRESS
(Summary)
DR. BRENDA M. GREENE
Founder and Executive Director, Center for Black Literature Director,
National Black Writers Conference
Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York
The focus of Dr. Greene’s message was, “How We
Choose The Way We Serve”. She stated that we do
so by listening to our inner voice that motivates
and inspires us. She reassured us that as Lions of
District 20-K1, we manifest a purpose driven life as
we make conscious decisions to care and serve in
our communities. She encouraged us to share our
stories of humanitarian service.
Dr. Greene referred the audience to “The 1619
Project” by Nikole Hannah-Jones and “My
Monticello”by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson for further
reading.
She wrapped up her address with the poem “What
Will Your Legacy Be” by Dr. Margaret Burroughs. In
the poem, Dr. Burroughs spoke passionately about
a lasting human legacy. The poem speaks of the
great accomplishments of civil rights pioneers. A
resounding lesson from Dr. Burroughs ’poem, is
“Pursue your passion, do great works and help
others along the way. By applying these principles
throughout our life, we can leave a rich and
enduring legacy for future generations”.
Dr. Greene affirmed that each one can affect change
by taking action within his / her own sphere and
collaborating with others to create a positive legacy.
Membership in a Lions Club is a significant
contribution to such a distinguished legacy.
